Northern Superchargers picked up a comfortable victory by 32 runs against the Birmingham Pheonix in Match 19 of the Hundred Men’s 2022 at the Edgbaston. With the win, the Northern Superchargers have two wins in five games now, while the Birmingham-based side is at the fourth position in the points table with three wins in five games.
Earlier in the contest, Birmingham Phoenix opted to bowl first after winning the toss and the Northern Superchargers got to a quickfire start with Adam Lyth taking on the bowling. Skipper Faf du Plessis was dismissed for a six-ball nine while Adam Hose went after the bowlers straightaway. Lyth reached his half-century in no time until Moeen Ali managed to dismiss him for a 26-ball 56 which included three fours and six sixes.
Harry Brook, David Willey and John Simpson were all removed in quick succession, leaving the likes of Hose and David Wiese to stitch a partnership. The duo added 47 in just 24 balls for the sixth wicket and Wiese’s 14-ball 34, which included four sixes, helped the Northern Superchargers post a score of 169 for 6 in the first innings. Hose remained unbeaten on 53 off 35 balls with four fours and two sixes. Moeen was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 13 in his 15-ball spell.
David Wiese’s three-wicket spell ends hopes for Birmingham Phoenix
In reply, the Birmingham Phoenix openers went bang bang upfront until Willey removed the in-form Will Smeed for an eight-ball 15. The destructive middle order featuring Liam Livingstone, Moeen and Matthew Wade could not do much damage and opener Miles Hammond, who did find boundaries, was dismissed for a 27-ball 31. Chris Benjamin, Benny Howell and Tom Helm all got starts, but the equation was too big for them to take their side home.
At the end, Birmingham Pheonix finished with 137 for 9 in their 100 balls while all the bowlers of Northern Superchargers were among the wickets column. It was Wiese’s 3 for 15 which had a big impact and rightly, he was awarded the Player of the Match for his heroics.
