If you are an ardent cricket fan then you must be knowing the current situation of the great South African cricket team. They were the best side a few years ago in world cricket but right now, they are one of if not the worst performers as far as the ICC full members are concerned. South Africa is going through a transition phase after the sudden retirements of their go-to players.

Recently, they were ruthlessly blanked by India at home. They received a proper hammering in the three-match Test series from the world number one Indian side. After a disastrous World Cup campaign in England and Wales, the South Africa coaching staff was fired which included head coach Ottis Gibson and his support staff. A lot of changes were made to the setup which led to the atmosphere being unstable.

Right now, CSA has hired a Director of Cricket and a Team Director on a temporary basis which can be changed on a series to series basis. The former South African one-day international player Corrie van Zyl and 37-year-old Enoch Nkwe were given the responsibility on the aforementioned positions. The latter was in charge of the side when they toured India.

Du Plessis feels former South Africa cricketers should help young players

According to South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis, these people should be given a permanent job so that they can work for the betterment of the team without any pressure if assured by CSA. He accepted the fact that the current phase is the toughest of his cricket career. He even said that right now the clarity is the most important thing if his side wants to get out of this tough phase. He even suggested that former South African greats must help the current crop of young players in these situations.

“Someone needs to make decisions, the director of cricket first and then filter down so everyone else can make decisions. It’s obvious that we need to make more use of ex-players but it also comes with challenges. I suppose it always comes down to finance.

I know for a fact that we have tried to get them involved but the financial thing is a hurdle. We need experience in the team right now and that comes from ex-players,” du Plessis was quoted as saying by Times Now. South Africa’s next international assignment is hosting England at home and the team will hope to comeback stronger.
