Virat Kohli stepped down as the captain of the Indian Test side after the three-match Test series against South Africa, which India lost 1-2. And now, Aakash Chopra has offered his thoughts on who should succeed Kohli as the next Test skipper.
Chopra opined that Rohit Sharma might seem to be the most obvious choice to take up the mantle from Kohli, but added that there are some issues with Sharma’s fitness as the ‘Hitman’ has been suffering from a hamstring problem for more than a year.
“Rohit Sharma seems to be the most obvious choice because he is the ODI and T20I captain at the moment and the last one year was a watershed event for him in Tests. But there are serious questions about his fitness because the hamstring is troubling him since 2020. In theory, it seems alright but will he be able to remain fit?” wondered Aakash Chopra on his YouTube channel.

Aakash Chopra also named two other players who can take over the captaincy from Kohli in the Test arena. Chopra feels that Rahul is an ideal candidate as his stature in Test match cricket has grown in the recent past.
“KL Rahul also seems to be an obvious choice. His stature has grown in Test cricket over the last one year. But it is also true that it has happened only after August. He was made to open and has not looked back since. But does he come across as your natural leader?” added Chopra.
Chopra feels that the other player who can be made Test captain is Rishabh Pant. Chopra added that Pant is sure to figure in the playing XI, but concluded by stating that Pant’s captaincy ability has not been completely tested.
“Can we make Rishabh Pant the captain? Sunny bhai has also asked him to be made the Test captain. Not a bad choice but Rishabh Pant goes too much up and down. He is young and his place is certain in the Test side but is he your leader? His captaincy credentials have not been tested yet,” concluded Chopra.
