Controversy took the center stage during the IPL 2022 clash between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians on Saturday (April 9). Virat Kohli was adjudged out in the penultimate over of the game and the same became a talking point among fans. It was a full-length delivery from Dewald Brevis that seemed to have smashed Kohli’s bat and pad simultaneously.

The on-field umpire was happy to raise his finger and Kohli wasn’t amused. He subsequently took a review and the third umpire came into the action. The slow-motion replay suggested that the ball had made contact with the bat before smashing the pad. Hence, Kohli seemed set to get a reprieve. Surprisingly, however, the decision stayed as the third umpire didn’t get ‘conclusive evidence’ to overturn the decision.

As a result, Kohli had to walk back after scoring 48 off 36 deliveries. Netizens weren’t amused with the decision as Twitter got flooded with criticism for the third umpire. Even the official account Iceland Cricket took a swipe at the howler. The page admin tweeted that the third umpires should come up with accurate decisions every time with the assistance of high-level technologies.

TV umpire should be able to make the right call: Iceland Cricket

“It’s not easy for on field umpires to detect inside edges or whether ball hit bat or pad first. But every TV umpire should be able to make the right call with the benefit of slow motion replays and technology like UltraEdge. @BCCI We have trained umpires ready to fly over,” tweeted Iceland Cricket.

Meanwhile, this episode didn’t have any impact on the game as RCB chased down 152 in 18.3 overs, clinching the contest by seven wickets. Besides Kohli, young opener Anuj Rawat made his bat talk and played some delightful shots all over the park. He scored 66 off 47 balls and was also adjudged the Player of the Match. Meanwhile, RCB have now won three of their four games and climbed up to the third place in the team standings.
