Graeme Hick’s England career is considered as an unfulfilled promise. Born in Zimbabwe, he was a part of Zimbabwe’s 1983 world cup squad, but made his England debut in 1991. A tall hard hitting, all-around player of cricket ball, he played until 2008 in county cricket.
Hick represented Worcestershire in county cricket and scored 22059 runs in 651 matches for them in List A matches with 40 centuries. He also picked up 225 wickets with his gentle off spin.

Gooch was the main instrument when England reached the finals in 1987 World cup, because he swept the Indian spinners to defeat in a match winning century. After his international retirement in 1995 at the age of 42 years, he held the record for most runs in List A, which is still his.

One of the most prolific openers in List A cricket, Desmond Haynes played for various teams apart from the West Indies and his home country Barbados. He played cricket for Middlesex and Scotland in county cricket and for Western Province in South African List A.
Haynes was the first batsman to score more than 12 ODI hundreds and first to 8000 ODI runs. He famously quoted that his record of 17 ODI centuries will not be broken any time soon. Desmond Haynes was the perfect foil for his more aggressive partner Gordon Greenidge. Haynes was the part of 1979 World cup winning team and had a wonderful international career that ended in 1994.
Desmond Haynes is the only international cricketer to score a century on his ODI debut and his final ODI.

Allan Lamb was a South African born English player. He moved to England in hopes of an international career due to the ban on South Africa due to apartheid.
Lamb started playing for the English county Northamptonshire in 1978 after making his first class debut with the Western Province in 1972 and made his England debut in 1982. A middle order batsman and occasional medium pacer, Lamb became an integral part of the English outfit because of his attacking batting.
Lamb was a part of English teams who took part in the 1987 and 1992 World cup finals. He was also the member of team in 1983 World cup where England were beaten by India in semi-finals. Allan Lamb is famous for making 17 runs single-handedly against Australia to win the match in 1986-87 triseries match.

The ‘Matara Mauler’ Sanath Jayasuriya is synonymous with mayhem in both ODI and Test cricket. Jayasuriya started off as a left arm spinner in 1989 with Sri Lanka, but transformed the way cricket is played when Captain Arjuna Ranatunga decided to open with him in the 1996 World cup.
Sanath Jayasuriya used his strong forearms to cut and pull the ball savagely. His fitness and agility meant that he was able to play international cricket well into the age of 40 years of age. Jayasuriya also held the record for fastest 100 and fastest 50 in ODI cricket. He was also the man of the tournament in the 1996 World cup.

One of the greatest openers in cricket history, Gordon Greenidge played for Barbados, Hampshire and the West Indies with distinction. Making his debut for Barbados in 1970, he rose to prominence as an aggressive batsman that liked to take the bowlers on.
He was quite adept at both the front and back foot play on every kind of pitch. He scored runs not only in the West Indies but also England, India, Australia and Pakistan. Greenidge was perhaps the first of his kind in One Day cricket. An attacking opener who liked to give it back to the bowlers whether it was Lillee, Thompson, Botham, Willis, Kapil, Imran who were the best of those time.
Greenidge retired from international cricket along with Sir Viv Richards, Jeff Dujon in 1991, just months before the 1992 World Cup.

A modern great, Ricky Ponting mesmerised the audience with his dashing and brilliant stroke play wherever he played in the world. Ponting made his List A debut for Tasmania in 1992-93 and played for teams like Somerset and Surrey.

Perhaps the most destructive batsman in cricket, Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards took the world of cricket by storm. He bought a fresh outlook to batting in cricket. He was brash, had a swagger when he walked out to bat, never wore a helmet even against bowlers like Lillee, Thompson, Imran, Willis, Botham. Richards just oozed confidence and dominance.
His rise as a cricketer was parallel to the rise of One Day cricket. Part of 2 World cup winning teams and he scored a century in the 1979 final to secure victory for his team. A formidable opponent against both spin and quick bowling, Richards dominated the One Day format both internationally and List A. He played for Somerset, Leeward Islands and Queensland amongst others.
Richards retired from international cricket in 1991 after he was dropped from the 1992 World cup team.

Kumar Sangakkara can be easily termed as a modern great in every sense of the game. A wicketkeeper and prolific top order batsman, Sangakkara has studied law and is considered as a very intelligent cricketer.
A product of the famous Colombo cricket club, Sangakkara debuted for SriLanka in 2000 replacing Romesh Kaluwitharana as the wicket keeper and became a permanent fixture in the team from 2003. Since then he has churned out runs at an astonishing rate. Currently the highest run getter in ODIs, he has – along with Mahela Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan- anchored the SriLankan batting for 15 years now.
A strong driver on both sides of the wicket, he is also a brilliant player of spin and can accelerate whenever required. The 2015 World cup would be his final in the One day format and he will certainly like to make it count.
