Right hand medium pacer from Sri Lanka, Shaul Karnain recorded best figures for his side on debut in ODIs when they faced New Zealand at Moratuwa in 1984. New Zealand needed 158 to win in 40 overs in a rain reduced game. Karnain, who opened the bowling made the target look impossible as he picked up a five wicket haul by dismissing Edgar, Howarth, Crains, and the Crowe brothers as the visiting team got crumbled to 76 for 7 and eventually got bowled out for 116 to lose the game by 41 runs.
