Top 10 Bowlers with most ODI wickets at a single venue

The game of cricket is popular for numbers as there are an incredible amount of records that are created every now and then. Each time a game is played, there are several new records that get registered in the record book and thus make the game all the more exciting. Cricketers have been known for having their favourite venues which suit them more than any other place. They get accustomed to the conditions of the ground as they play a certain number of matches and understand what the pitch and the ground have to offer. As the players move forward in their careers, they tend to develop a special liking to some particular venues and bring out their best whenever a game is played there. There are numerous instances of bowlers getting more wickets at some grounds as compared to others. Here are the bowlers with most ODI wickets at a single venue. 10. Anil Kumble – 56 wickets at Sharjah Cricket Stadium: Anil Kumble. Though most of those were dominated by Pakistan due to a flurry of quality bowlers, the legendary leg-spinner from India Anil Kumble was the most prolific bowler for the team in that duration. He picked up 56 wickets in 40 ODIs at Sharjah and had an amazing economy rate of just 3.94. His best figures of 4/50 came against West Indies in the year 1991. India’s leading wicket-taker in ODIs and Tests in currently serving as the coach of the Indian national side. 9. Sanath Jayasuriya – 60 wickets at R. His left-arm spin was much underrated but, he was a more than useful bowler throughout his career. He could put a stop on the run scoring with his accuracy and pick up a wicket or two in the process. He served as the fifth bowler for a number of years for Sri Lanka and more often than not, used to finish his quota of 10 overs. At Colombo, his serviceable spin used to become even more lethal as he bagged 60 wickets in 71 matches there. During his tenure, there were not too many grounds in Sri Lanka and most of the matches were played at the Premadasa and hence the record at the venue. 8. The bowling actions of Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Hafeez, and Shoaib Malik are quite similar to that Mushtaq’s which shows that each one of them has taken a leaf out of his book. He enjoyed a healthy run of form at Sharjah and scalped 61 wickets in 36 matches. On four occasions, he picked up 4 wickets in an innings and had an excellent average of 21.85. His best performance came against New Zealand in 2001 when he took 4 wickets for just 17 runs and dismantled the Kiwis for just 127 runs. 7. Abdur Razzak – 75 wickets at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka: Bangladeshi cricketer Abdur Razzak. He was the leading wicket-taker in ODIs for Bangladesh until Shakib Al Hasan took over recently. He was an integral part of the team from 2004 to 2009, but he was suspended when found to have an illegal action. There are not too many grounds in Bangladesh and it is quite natural to have most of the records at Dhaka where the bulk of the cricket is played. So is the case with Razzak as he has 75 wickets to his name in 52 matches and also has two five-wicket hauls at the venue. 6. Muttiah Muralitharan – 75 wickets at R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo: Muttiah Muralitharan. (Photo Source : Associated Press) If there was any bowler who could pick up wickets at will; it was Muttiah Muralitharan. He used to turn the ball miles with one of the most complicated actions in the game. It was pretty hard for the batsmen to pick him as he could turn the ball both ways with minimal changes in action. The fact again comes to life that not too many grounds were active in Sri Lanka during his days and he played most of his games at home at the Premadasa Stadium. In 57 games at the venue, he grabbed 75 wickets which includes a five-wicket haul and 2 four-wicket hauls. 5. Mashrafe Mortaza – 77 wickets at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka: Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza. He showed great promise right from his debut as he could bowl over 140 kph, the first of the kind from Bangladesh. He is also the leading wicket-taker in ODIs amongst the pacers from the nation. Bangladesh’s favourite venue of Dhaka has also been his most fruitful as he has accounted for 77 wickets in 53 ODIs there. Mashrafe’s career has been highly marred by injuries as he has had surgeries in the knee, but he is still pretty much in control leading the national team. 4. Muttiah Muralitharan – 82 wickets at Sharjah Cricket Stadium: Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan. Along with India and Pakistan, the Sri Lankan team that played a lot of cricket at that venue in the 90s and Muralitharan, as always, was the leading bowler for them. He took 82 wickets in 45 matches at an outstanding average of 17.73. He also has 2 five-wicket hauls at the venue to his name. His best bowling figures of 30/7 came against India in the year 2000 in the Coca-Cola Cup which was also his best figures in ODIs. 3. Shakib Al Hasan – 100 wickets at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka: Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan. He is responsible for raising the bar of Bangladesh cricket from being underdogs to fighters. They can no longer be underestimated in the shorter formats of the game and most of the credit goes to Shakib for his wonderful all-round skills. He has taken 100 wickets in 70 matches at the venue with a five-wicket haul and 3 four-wicket hauls. He is also the leading wicket-taker for Bangladesh across all formats and with a few years still ahead of him, certainly is on the cards to end up as the leading run-getter in all the formats as well. 2. Waqar Younis – 114 wickets at Sharjah Cricket Stadium: Waqar Younis. Waqar Younis had the most threatening fast bowling partnership ever with Wasim Akram and the duo used to run down the opposition with the swing and pace. Sharjah was his most rewarding place as Waqar picked up a massive 114 wickets in 61 ODIs. He had a tremendous strike rate of 26.4 and 4 five-wicket hauls at the venue which shows his domination over the batsmen. He is also the second highest wicket-taker for Pakistan in Tests and ODIs. 1. Wasim Akram – 122 wickets at Sharjah Cricket Stadium: Former Pakistani cricketer Wasim Akram. He could swing the ball both ways and that too, with the new as well as the old ball. There is no one who has been able to get close to his mastery with the ball till date. At Sharjah, he played 77 ODIs and took 122 wickets at just 19.5 runs per wicket. He has 4 four-wicket hauls and a five-for at the venue. He is also the leading wicket taker for Pakistan in ODIs and Tests. He and Waqar Younis were responsible for putting the Pakistani fast bowling on the world map.
