The match was the 2nd semi-final of the 1990 Austral-Asia cup held in Sharjah. Australia batted first against Sri Lanka and scored a huge 332 runs thanks to 117 by Dean Jones and a then record fastest 50 by Simon O’Donnell.

O’Donnell was an all-rounder who bowled medium pace and was a hard-hitting batsman. Simon O’Donnell came in at number 4 and scored 74 runs off 29 balls with 6 sixes and 4 fours with his 50 coming off just 18 balls.
