Cricket is a team game they say, but at times, we see individual brilliance taking the game away from the opposition in no time. While it is the bowlers who usually are expected to knock 10 down, the batsmen have an equally larger role to play to amass big runs, especially in the limited overs, to give their side better chances of a win. There have been such batting heroics in ODI cricket that have been breathtaking and absolutely great to watch. Scoring in excess of 150 in an innings in ODI seems tough, but there have been players who have crossed the landmark on a number of occasions. Here are the highest individual scores in ODIs:

During the 2<sup>nd</sup> ODI at Southampton against England in 2013, New Zealand opener Martin Guptill plundered an unbeaten 189 off 155 balls to register himself as the highest individual run scorer for the team in an ODI surpassing Lou Vincent’s 172. His knock also gave New Zealand a series win in England and handed their first series defeat at home since 2009. Having chosen to bat, Guptill opened the innings and started right from the word go. He brought up his century in 111 balls and scored his next 89 in 44 balls. He hit 19 fours and 2 sixes in that innings as New Zealand posted 359. England, in return, could manage just 273.

<strong>9. Sir Viv Richards – 189*:</strong>

One of the greatest batsmen to have ever played the game scored an unbeaten 189 in 1984 against England at Old Trafford. In an era when scoring a century itself was a big achievement, Ric had amassed 189 off 170 balls to take the West Indies total to 272 in 55 overs. His dominance was such that the second highest scorer for Windies in the game was Baptiste with 26 runs. On a pitch where other Caribbean players struggled as 8 out of 11 batsmen failed to get into double digits, Richards showed his class. He hit 21 boundaries and 5 sixes. West Indies won the match by 104 runs after bowling out England for 168.

Pakistani opener Saeed Anwar is most notably known for his knock of 194 against India in 1997. He held the record for highest individual score in ODIs for about 12 years. Anwar’s 194 took Pakistan’s total to 327. In the 19<sup>th</sup> over, Anwar struggled to run and Afridi was his runner till the end of the innings. Anwar hit 5 sixes and 22 boundaries to reach the score in 146 balls. He was unlucky to have missed out on an ODI double as Sachin Tendulkar got his wicket in the fag end of the game. Pakistan won the match by 35 runs.

Zimbabwean middle order batsman, Charles Coventry got into limelight after he broke Saeed Anwar’s record for highest individual score in 2009 against Bangladesh. Coming in to bat at number 3, Coventry hit 7 sixes and 16 fours in his innings of 194* which came in 156 balls. His heroics enabled Zimbabwe score in excess of 300 as they posted 312. Coventry was, however, unlucky as his efforts went in vain as Bangladesh chased down the score with 4 wickets in hand. It was Tamim Iqbal’s 154 that overshadowed Coventry&#8217;s efforts.

<strong>6. Sachin Tendulkar – 200*:</strong>

One of the greats of the game, Sachin created another record when he became the first man in the history of ODI cricket to score a double century. The superman from India scored an unbeaten 200 against South Africa at Gwalior in 2010. His 147-ball double century was embellished with 25 boundaries and 3 sixes. It was his innings and the skipper MS Dhoni’s quick fire 35 ball 68 that propelled India to a score of 401. Sachin reached his century in 90 balls and reached the 150 mark in 118 balls. India won the match convincingly by 153 runs as South Africa were bowled out for 248.

In the 7<sup>th</sup> ODI against Australia in Australia’s tour to India in 2013 at Bengaluru, Rohit Sharma became the third player in the history of ODI cricket to score a double century. The highlight of Sharma’s of his knock was the way he built his innings like a crescendo. He scored his 50 in 71 balls which was scratchy and slow. But soon, he was seen reaching his ton in 114 balls. He kicked off from there to score his next 50 runs in 36 balls and the subsequent 50 in just 16 balls! Sharma was dismissed for 209 by Clint McKay in the last over of the innings. He hit 16 sixes and 12 boundaries in his 158-ball 209 runs. India posted 383 and had a close shave as Aussies fell short by just 57 runs.

The big West Indian became the first non-Indian player to score an ODI double hundred. He also became the first batsman to score a double-century in World Cup. He scored 215 against Zimbabwe during the group stages of the 2015 ICC World Cup. Having batted first, Gayle hammered the Zimbabwean bowling attack and scored the fastest double century of ODI history by reaching the feat in 138 balls. He hit 16 sixes in his innings, the most in an innings in ODIs (joint record holder with Rohit Sharma). He was unlucky to be dismissed on the last ball of the innings on 215 off 147 balls. He helped West Indies score 372 runs and they won the match by 73 runs (D/L method).

The dazzling Indian opener from Delhi, Virender Sehwag, in 2011 against West Indies at Indore, became the second player to score an ODI double century, after Sachin Tendulkar. He held the record for the highest ODI score for 3 years. Sehwag bludgeoned the West Indies bowling and had an opening partnership of 176 runs with Gautam Gambhir. He scored his century in just 69 balls hitting 10 fours and 5 sixes. He brought up his double century in 140 balls by hitting 7 towering maximums and 25 boundaries. Sehwag was dismissed in the 47th over off a Kieron Pollard delivery and was caught by substitute fielder A Martin. India scored 418, in response to which West Indies could only post 265 giving India a 153-run win.

<strong>2. Martin Guptill – 237*:</strong>

Martin Guptill surpassed his best of 189 and remained the record holder for the highest individual score by a New Zealand batsman, in the 2015 World Cup, scoring an unbeaten 237 off 163 balls, against West Indies, in the quarter-finals on 21 March. His innings included 11 sixes and 24 fours and the team finished at 6/393, is the best total in a World Cup knockout match. It was a remarkable turnaround in form for him, given he went from three ducks in the lead-up matches to scoring two fifties, a century and the 237 in the quarter-finals. Ending the tournament with 547 runs, he emerged as its highest scorer, with his team finishing second to Australia. New Zealand in that match scored 393/6 and won by 143 runs as West Indies were bowled out for 250.

<strong>1. Rohit Sharma – 264:</strong>

Rohit Sharma became the only batsman in the history of the game to score 2 double centuries and the only player to score in excess of 250 in ODIs when he hit 264 against Sri Lanka at Kolkata in November 2014. Having played a maiden off Angelo Mathews at the beginning of the innings, this was his comeback match after 10 weeks. As usual, he started cautiously scoring his fifty in 72 balls but he did up the ante by scoring a run a ball century. He started building a crescendo with 150 coming in 25 balls and his second ODI double century coming in 151 balls. His next 64 runs came in 22 balls as he ended with a gigantic 264 off 173 balls with 33 fours and 9 sixes to his name. Courtesy to his knock, India posted 404 and yet again won by 153 runs as Sri Lanka managed just 251.

He held the record for the highest ODI score for 3 years. Sehwag bludgeoned the West Indies bowling and had an opening partnership of 176 runs with Gautam Gambhir. He scored his century in just 69 balls hitting 10 fours and 5 sixes. He brought up his double century in 140 balls by hitting 7 towering maximums and 25 boundaries. Sehwag was dismissed in the 47th over off a Kieron Pollard delivery and was caught by substitute fielder A Martin. India scored 418, in response to which West Indies could only post 265 giving India a 153-run win.</p>

<p>Martin Guptill surpassed his best of 189 and remained the record holder for the&nbsp;highest individual score by a New Zealand batsman, in the 2015 World Cup, scoring an unbeaten 237 off 163 balls, against West Indies, in the quarter-finals on 21 March. His innings included 11 sixes and 24 fours and the team finished at 6/393, is the best total in a World Cup knockout match. It was a remarkable turnaround in form for him, given he went from three ducks in the lead-up matches&nbsp;to scoring two fifties, a century and the 237 in the quarter-finals. Ending the tournament with 547 runs, he emerged as its highest scorer, with his team finishing second to Australia. New Zealand in that match scored 393/6 and won by 143 runs as West Indies were bowled out for 250.</p>

<p>Rohit Sharma became the only batsman in the history of the game to score 2 double centuries and the only player to score in excess of 250 in ODIs when he hit 264 against Sri Lanka at Kolkata in November 2014. Having played a maiden off Angelo Mathews at the beginning of the innings, this was his comeback match after 10 weeks. As usual, he started cautiously scoring his fifty in 72 balls but he did up the ante by scoring a run a ball century. He started building a crescendo with 150 coming in 25 balls and his second ODI double century coming in 151 balls. His next 64 runs came in 22 balls as he ended with a gigantic 264 off 173 balls with 33 fours and 9 sixes to his name. Courtesy to his knock, India posted 404 and yet again won by 153 runs as Sri Lanka managed just 251.</p>

<p>Cricket is a team game they say, but at times, we see individual brilliance taking the game away from the opposition in no time. While it is the bowlers who usually are expected to knock 10 down, the batsmen have an equally larger role to play to amass big runs, especially in the limited overs, to give their side better chances of a win. There have been such batting heroics in ODI cricket that have been breathtaking and absolutely great to watch. Scoring in excess of 150 in an innings in ODI seems tough, but there have been players who have crossed the landmark on a number of occasions. Here are the highest individual scores in ODIs:</p>

<p>During the 2<sup>nd</sup> ODI at Southampton against England in 2013, New Zealand opener Martin Guptill plundered an unbeaten 189 off 155 balls to register himself as the highest individual run scorer for the team in an ODI surpassing Lou Vincent’s 172. His knock also gave New Zealand a series win in England and handed their first series defeat at home since 2009. Having chosen to bat, Guptill opened the innings and started right from the word go. He brought up his century in 111 balls and scored his next 89 in 44 balls. He hit 19 fours and 2 sixes in that innings as New Zealand posted 359. England, in return, could manage just 273.</p>

<p>One of the greatest batsmen to have ever played the game scored an unbeaten 189 in 1984 against England at Old Trafford. In an era when scoring a century itself was a big achievement, Ric had amassed 189 off 170 balls to take the West Indies total to 272 in 55 overs. His dominance was such that the second highest scorer for Windies in the game was Baptiste with 26 runs. On a pitch where other Caribbean players struggled as 8 out of 11 batsmen failed to get into double digits, Richards showed his class. He hit 21 boundaries and 5 sixes. West Indies won the match by 104 runs after bowling out England for 168.</p>

<p>Pakistani opener Saeed Anwar is most notably known for his knock of 194 against India in 1997. He held the record for highest individual score in ODIs for about 12 years. Anwar’s 194 took Pakistan’s total to 327. In the 19<sup>th</sup> over, Anwar struggled to run and Afridi was his runner till the end of the innings. Anwar hit 5 sixes and 22 boundaries to reach the score in 146 balls. He was unlucky to have missed out on an ODI double as Sachin Tendulkar got his wicket in the fag end of the game. Pakistan won the match by 35 runs.</p>

<p>Zimbabwean middle order batsman, Charles Coventry got into limelight after he broke Saeed Anwar’s record for highest individual score in 2009 against Bangladesh. Coming in to bat at number 3, Coventry hit 7 sixes and 16 fours in his innings of 194* which came in 156 balls. His heroics enabled Zimbabwe score in excess of 300 as they posted 312. Coventry was, however, unlucky as his efforts went in vain as Bangladesh chased down the score with 4 wickets in hand. It was Tamim Iqbal’s 154 that overshadowed Coventry&#8217;s efforts.</p>

<p>One of the greats of the game, Sachin created another record when he became the first man in the history of ODI cricket to score a double century. The superman from India scored an unbeaten 200 against South Africa at Gwalior in 2010. His 147-ball double century was embellished with 25 boundaries and 3 sixes. It was his innings and the skipper MS Dhoni’s quick fire 35 ball 68 that propelled India to a score of 401. Sachin reached his century in 90 balls and reached the 150 mark in 118 balls. India won the match convincingly by 153 runs as South Africa were bowled out for 248.</p>

<p>In the 7<sup>th</sup> ODI against Australia in Australia’s tour to India in 2013 at Bengaluru, Rohit Sharma became the third player in the history of ODI cricket to score a double century. The highlight of Sharma’s of his knock was the way he built his innings like a crescendo. He scored his 50 in 71 balls which was scratchy and slow. But soon, he was seen reaching his ton in 114 balls. He kicked off from there to score his next 50 runs in 36 balls and the subsequent 50 in just 16 balls! Sharma was dismissed for 209 by Clint McKay in the last over of the innings. He hit 16 sixes and 12 boundaries in his 158-ball 209 runs. India posted 383 and had a close shave as Aussies fell short by just 57 runs.</p>
<h4><strong>4. Chris Gayle – 215:</strong></h4>

<p>The big West Indian became the first non-Indian player to score an ODI double hundred. He also became the first batsman to score a double-century in World Cup. He scored 215 against Zimbabwe during the group stages of the 2015 ICC World Cup. Having batted first, Gayle hammered the Zimbabwean bowling attack and scored the fastest double century of ODI history by reaching the feat in 138 balls. He hit 16 sixes in his innings, the most in an innings in ODIs (joint record holder with Rohit Sharma). He was unlucky to be dismissed on the last ball of the innings on 215 off 147 balls.
