Top 10 Highest individual scores on ODI debut: All cricketers wish to have a dream debut in which they can showcase their talents. There have been 10 batsmen who have managed to score a century on ODI debut. Some of these cricketers went to have a successful international career while others did not quite manage to live up to the expectations. Let’s have a look at the Top 10 Highest individual scores on ODI debut: 10. Saleem Elahi (Pakistan) 102*: Saleem Elahi. (© David Munden/Popperfoto/Getty Images) Saleem Elahi’s international career started on a bright note when he smashed an unbeaten 102 on debut against Sri Lanka at Gujranwala in 1995. This was remarkable particularly since he was brought into Pakistan’s ODI side without having played a single first-class match. The first ODI of the 3 match series saw the visitors scoring 233/5. Pakistan won the match comfortably by 9 wickets courtesy a wonderful hundred from Elahi who opened the innings. He played 48 ODIs scoring 1579 runs at an average of 36.72. His stand-and-deliver style of batting got him 4 tons and 9 half-centuries in ODI cricket. Dennis Amiss (England) 103: Dennis Amiss. (Photo Source: PA Photos) Englishman Dennis Amiss played 18 ODIs for his country scoring 859 runs at an average of 47.72. His ODI debut was memorable one against old foes Australia at Old Trafford in 1972. It was the first match of the 3-match series the visitors batted first in this 55 overs contest. The Aussies scored 222/8 and England needed a fine start which was provided by opener Amiss who scored 103 which ensured a comfortable 6 wicket victory for the home side. Amiss is the first debutant to score a hundred in ODIs. He also scored a hundred in his last ODI, against the Aussies in 1977. The Warwickshire batsman was powerful and a wonderful timer of the cricket ball with covers and midwicket being his strong scoring areas. 8. Michael Lumb (England) 106: Michael Lumb. (© Getty Images) Another England batsman, Michael Lumb had a memorable debut in the Caribbean in 2004. At the age of 34, he became England’s oldest debutant in ODIs. Lumb got an opportunity to play since Alex Hales and Eoin Morgan were ruled out due to injuries. England selected their T20I team for an ODI series due to scheduling issues and the left-handed opening batsman Lumb became the beneficiary who grabbed this opportunity with both hands. He was a regular member of the T20 side and known for his attacking batting. West Indies batting first posted 269/6 and England had a great chance to win the match courtesy Lumb who scored a wonderful 106 off 117 balls. England eventually fell short by 15 runs and lost the first of the 3-match series. With the selectors opting for younger players Lumb’s ODI career was limited to just 3 ODIs of this series which England won 2-1. He did well scoring 165 runs at an average of 55.00. 7. Rob Nicol (New Zealand) 108*: Rob Nicol. Batting first the home side scored 231/6 and in reply the Kiwis won comfortably by 9 wickets courtesy a brilliant 108* from Nicol who opened the innings. He also bowls right-arm medium pace and off spin. He played 22 ODIs for his country and scored 586 runs at an average of 30.84. He made 2 tons and 2 half centuries with a career best of 146 against Zimbabwe at Dunedin in 2012. 6. Phillip Hughes (Australia) 112: Late Phillip Hughes. The opener scored a wonderful 112 off 129 balls smashing 14 fours against Sri Lanka at the MCG in 2013. The first of the 5-match series witnessed Aussies piling up 305/5 thereby allowing them to win the match by 107 runs. The left-handed opener was one of the most promising batsmen to have played for Australia however an unfortunate incident claimed his life a week before his 26th birthday. He played 25 ODIs and scored 826 runs at an average of 35.91 making 2 tons and 4 half centuries. 5. Andy Flower (Zimbabwe) 115*: Andy Flower. (© Getty Images) Zimbabwe’s greatest batsmen made his debut against Sri Lanka in the 1992 World Cup at New Plymouth in New Zealand. Opening the innings the elegant left-hander carried his bat scoring a composed 115 off 152 balls. The knock enabled his team to post 312/4 however it wasn’t sufficient enough as the Lankans won this thrilling match by 3 wickets with 4 balls remaining. Nevertheless, his innings gave a glimpse of his immense ability. The former wicket-keeper batsman played 213 ODIs and made 6786 runs at an average of 35.34. He made 4 tons and 55 half centuries scoring runs in all conditions. He remains his country’s highest run scorer in Tests and ODIs. Post retirement he had a highly successful coaching stint with England. 4. Martin Guptill (New Zealand) 122*: Martin Guptill. (© Getty Images) New Zealand’s attacking right-handed opening batsman Martin Guptill made his ODI debut against the West Indies at Auckland in 2009 and scored an unbeaten 122 off 135 balls. The home side posted 275/4 in match which couldn’t produce any result due to persistent rain. Guptill hit 8 crisp boundaries and 2 sixes in this fourth of the 5-match series. He is has played 119 ODIs scoring 4240 runs at an average of 41.16. He has smashed 9 tons and 25 half-centuries and become a dependable batsman for his team. The short-arm pull is his best shot and few players in the world can play this shot as elegantly as he can. He currently holds the record of highest individual score in a World Cup with a knock of 237*against the Windies in the quarterfinal of the 2015 edition. 3. Colin Ingram (South Africa) 124: Colin Ingram. The Proteas put on a mammoth 351/6 and won the match by 64 runs. Ingram was declared the player of the match for his wonderful effort. This was the first of the 3-match series. The 30-year-old has played 31 ODIs for South Africa scoring 843 runs at an average of 32.42. He made 3 hundreds and 3 fifties with his career best being this particular knock. Ingram plays county cricket for Glamorgan as a Kolpak player and is the captain of the Warriors Team in South Africa. 2. Mark Chapman (Hong Kong) 124*: Mark Chapman. (Photo Source: ICC) The 21-year-old Hong Kong batsman has played one ODI on 16th Nov 2015 against the UAE scoring a match-winning 124* from 116 balls. The left-handed middle-order batsman also bowls slow left-arm spin. His memorable debut in the ongoing ICC World Cricket League Championship in the UAE enabled his team to win the match by 89 runs. Batting first Hong Kong posted 298/4 and in reply the UAE got bowled out for 209 in 42.3 overs. Chapman has represented his country in the 2010 Under-19 World Cup and has played 14 List A matches scoring 587 runs at an impressive average of 58.70. Hong Kong have qualified for the first round of the World T20 2016 and have high ambitions to develop a strong cricket team hence greater things are expected from this talented batsman. 1. Desmond Haynes (West Indies) 148: Desmond Haynes. The first of the 2-match series witnessed a belligerent knock from Haynes who smashed 148 off just 136 balls smashing 16 fours and 2 sixes. The Windies posted 313/9 and won the match by 44 runs with the target being revised due to bad light. It was a dazzling innings by Haynes who stroked the ball to all parts of the ground. He was named the player of the match for his awesome knock. Haynes played 238 ODIs scoring 8648 runs at an average of 41.37 making 17 hundreds and 57 fifties. His prolific opening partnership with Gordon Greenidge is a part of cricketing folklore and set the benchmark for the future generation of openers around the world.
