Top 10 Highest Partnerships In tests: Cricket is a game that is all about building partnerships. The only way a side can win is by scoring more runs than the opposition; and the only way to achieve this is forming crucial partnerships. 10. Jacques Rudolph &amp; Boeta Dippenaar &#8211; 429* v Bangladesh:

Yet again, it was Bangladesh that was at the receiving end. In 2003, in the 3rd Test match, in reply to Bangladesh’s 173, South Africa lost Smith early for just 16 runs and Gibbs for 17 runs. Rudolph (222) and Dippenaar (177) put on 429 runs for the unbroken third wicket stand, the best ever for any wicket for South Africa, as they declared at 2 for 470 towards the end of the first session. In the process, they broke the previous record that belonged to Graeme Smith and Herschelle Gibbs, who put on 368 runs for the first wicket against Pakistan in the same year.

9. Mahela Jayawardene &amp; Thilan Samaraweera &#8211; 437 v Pakistan:

In the first Test at Karachi in 2009, Sri Lankan pair of Jayawardene and Samaraweera created the world record partnership for the 4th wicket. After Sangakkara departed and the scorecard read 177/3, the duo joined hands to muster 437 runs for the 4th wicket. They broke the previous best 4th wicket partnership, which was 411 runs by England&#8217;s Peter May and Colin Cowdrey against the West Indies in 1957. While Samaraweera was cleaned up by Kaneria on 231 runs, Jayawardene remained unbeaten on 240 runs as Sri Lanka declared at 644/7. This was the same match where Younis Khan scored a triple century.

8. Marvan Atapattu &amp; Kumar Sangakkara &#8211; 438 v Zimbabwe:

In 2004, when Sri Lanka played Zimbabwe in the 2nd Test at Bulawayo, the then Sri Lankan skipper Marvan Atapattu and Kumar Sangakkara put on 438 runs for the 2nd wicket. In reply to Zimbabwe’s first innings score of 228, Sri Lanka lost the wicket of Jayasuriya (48) when they reached the 100-run mark. Sangakkara came in to bat and the duo put on 438 runs before Atapattu was dismissed on 249 by Chigumbura. Sangakkara continued batting and was dismissed on 270 by Panyangara. Both the batsmen hit 36 boundaries in their innings. Atapattu struck one maximum while Sangakkara mustered 2. Sri Lanka declared at 713/2 and eventually won the match by an innings and 254 runs.

7. Conrad Hunte &amp; Garfield Sobers &#8211; 446 v Pakistan:

Sir Conrad Hunte, in his debut series, put on 446 runs for the 2nd wicket with Sir Garfield Sobers against Pakistan in 1958. The partnership was then the second-highest partnership in history and is still the sixth highest. The partnership was broken when Hunte was run out on 260. Sir Garfield Sobers went on to make a triple hundred (365*) and became the 7th batsman in the history of the game to score a triple century and the first West Indian to do so. West Indies went on to win the match by an innings and 174 runs.

In the ongoing Test between Australia and West Indies at Hobart, the Aussie openers gave them a solid start, but there was a situation when they were 3 down for 121 and this is what brought Adam Voges and Shaun Marsh at the crease together. The duo not only stabilized the innings, but counterattacked the Windies bowling perfectly to make sure they don’t have to come out once again and bat. Voges and Marsh while channelizing their efforts together also got to their hundreds and converted them into bigger ones staying unbeaten at the end of day 1 on 174 and 139 respectively. Australia were already 438/3 and in a position of authority. The second day brought with it more runs and in little time the partnership was worth 350 runs. Voges soon got to his double hundred and looked good for more while Marsh also scored fluently.  But after batting for 449 runs together for the 4th wicket, the partnership was finally broken when Marsh got out for 182 as Voges stood at the other end unbeaten on 249. Australia let him get to his 250 and declared soon on the team score of 583 while he was still going strong on 269.

5. Mudassar Nazar &amp; Javed Miandad &#8211; 451 v India:

In the 4th Test in 1983 against arch-rivals India, Mudassar Nazar, and Javed Miandad helped Pakistan recover from 60/2 to a mammoth 581/3 declared. The duo put on 451 runs for the third wicket which is the 3rd highest partnership for the 3rd wicket in the history of cricket. Nazar scored 231 runs of 444 deliveries before he was dismissed DR Doshi. Miandad remained unbeaten on 280 of 460 balls. India, in reply, could only score 189 and 273 to lose by an innings and 119 runs.

4. Bill Ponsford &amp; Don Bradman &#8211; 451 v England:

The match dates back to 18 August 1934 when Australia toured England for the Ashes. In the Ashes that year, Sir Donald Bradman had already scored 2 triple hundreds in the first and the fourth Test; with scores of 334 and 304 respectively. With such form, he joined hands with opener Ponsford when Australia was 21/1. The pair put on 451 runs for the 2nd wicket. Bradman looked set for his third triple ton but was dismissed for 244 by Bowes. Ponsford was unlucky to be dismissed hit wicket of a delivery by Allen on 266 after having batted so well. Australia won the match by a margin of 562 runs.

In the first Test at Wellington in 1991, Martin Crowe and Andrew Jones put on 467 runs for the 3rd wicket, a world record back then, and currently the second highest partnership for the 3rd wicket. New Zealand was staring at defeat after their collapse of 174 in the first innings. Sri Lanka in response had posted 497 runs. But in the 2nd innings, A Jones and M Crowe joined hands to save the Kiwi side. Both the batsmen were dismissed by Arjuna Ranatunga. Andrew Jones scored 186 while Martin Crowe was very unlucky to be dismissed at 299.

The 1st Test between India and Sri Lanka in 1997 was a very high scoring match at Colombo. When India posted a first innings score of 537, Sri Lanka hit back with 952/6 declared. After losing Atapattu early, opener Jayasuriya joined hands with Roshan Mahaname to put on 576 runs for the 2nd wicket. Jayasuriya went on to score a triple century and ended with 340 runs under his name. His wicket fell when the scorecard read 615 runs. His partner Mahanama was dismissed in the previous over for a score of 225 as he was trapped in front of the stumps by Anil Kumble who broke the record partnership.

In the first Test at Karachi in 2009, Sri Lankan pair of Jayawardene and Samaraweera created the world record partnership for the 4th wicket. After Sangakkara departed and the scorecard read 177/3, the duo joined hands to muster 437 runs for the 4th wicket. They broke the previous best 4th wicket partnership, which was 411 runs by England&#8217;s Peter May and Colin Cowdrey against the West Indies in 1957. While Samaraweera was cleaned up by Kaneria on 231 runs, Jayawardene remained unbeaten on 240 runs as Sri Lanka declared at 644/7. This was the same match where Younis Khan scored a triple century.
<h4>8. Marvan Atapattu &amp; Kumar Sangakkara &#8211; 438 v Zimbabwe:</h4>
In 2004, when Sri Lanka played Zimbabwe in the 2nd Test at Bulawayo, the then Sri Lankan skipper Marvan Atapattu and Kumar Sangakkara put on 438 runs for the 2nd wicket. In reply to Zimbabwe’s first innings score of 228, Sri Lanka lost the wicket of Jayasuriya (48) when they reached the 100-run mark. Sangakkara came in to bat and the duo put on 438 runs before Atapattu was dismissed on 249 by Chigumbura. Sangakkara continued batting and was dismissed on 270 by Panyangara. Both the batsmen hit 36 boundaries in their innings. Atapattu struck one maximum while Sangakkara mustered 2. Sri Lanka declared at 713/2 and eventually won the match by an innings and 254 runs.
<h4>7. Conrad Hunte &amp; Garfield Sobers &#8211; 446 v Pakistan:</h4>
Sir Conrad Hunte, in his debut series, put on 446 runs for the 2nd wicket with Sir Garfield Sobers against Pakistan in 1958. The partnership was then the second-highest partnership in history and is still the sixth highest. The partnership was broken when Hunte was run out on 260. Sir Garfield Sobers went on to make a triple hundred (365*) and became the 7th batsman in the history of the game to score a triple century and the first West Indian to do so. West Indies went on to win the match by an innings and 174 runs.
<h4>6. Adam Voges &amp; Shaun Marsh &#8211; 449 v West Indies:</h4>

In the ongoing Test between Australia and West Indies at Hobart, the Aussie openers gave them a solid start, but there was a situation when they were 3 down for 121 and this is what brought Adam Voges and Shaun Marsh at the crease together. The duo not only stabilized the innings, but counterattacked the Windies bowling perfectly to make sure they don’t have to come out once again and bat. Voges and Marsh while channelizing their efforts together also got to their hundreds and converted them into bigger ones staying unbeaten at the end of day 1 on 174 and 139 respectively. Australia were already 438/3 and in a position of authority. The second day brought with it more runs and in little time the partnership was worth 350 runs. Voges soon got to his double hundred and looked good for more while Marsh also scored fluently.  But after batting for 449 runs together for the 4th wicket, the partnership was finally broken when Marsh got out for 182 as Voges stood at the other end unbeaten on 249. Australia let him get to his 250 and declared soon on the team score of 583 while he was still going strong on 269.

<h4>5. Mudassar Nazar &amp; Javed Miandad &#8211; 451 v India:</h4>
In the 4th Test in 1983 against arch-rivals India, Mudassar Nazar, and Javed Miandad helped Pakistan recover from 60/2 to a mammoth 581/3 declared. The duo put on 451 runs for the third wicket which is the 3rd highest partnership for the 3rd wicket in the history of cricket. Nazar scored 231 runs of 444 deliveries before he was dismissed DR Doshi. Miandad remained unbeaten on 280 of 460 balls. India, in reply, could only score 189 and 273 to lose by an innings and 119 runs.
<h4>4. Bill Ponsford &amp; Don Bradman &#8211; 451 v England:</h4>
The match dates back to 18 August 1934 when Australia toured England for the Ashes. In the Ashes that year, Sir Donald Bradman had already scored 2 triple hundreds in the first and the fourth Test; with scores of 334 and 304 respectively. With such form, he joined hands with opener Ponsford when Australia was 21/1. The pair put on 451 runs for the 2nd wicket. Bradman looked set for his third triple ton but was dismissed for 244 by Bowes. Ponsford was unlucky to be dismissed hit wicket of a delivery by Allen on 266 after having batted so well. Australia won the match by a margin of 562 runs.
<h4>3. Andrew Jones &amp; Martin Crowe &#8211; 467 v Sri Lanka:</h4>
In the first Test at Wellington in 1991, Martin Crowe and Andrew Jones put on 467 runs for the 3rd wicket, a world record back then, and currently the second highest partnership for the 3rd wicket. New Zealand was staring at defeat after their collapse of 174 in the first innings. Sri Lanka in response had posted 497 runs. But in the 2nd innings, A Jones and M Crowe joined hands to save the Kiwi side. Both the batsmen were dismissed by Arjuna Ranatunga. Andrew Jones scored 186 while Martin Crowe was very unlucky to be dismissed at 299.
<h4>2. Sanath Jayasuriya &amp; Roshan Mahanama &#8211; 576 v India:</h4>

The 1st Test between India and Sri Lanka in 1997 was a very high scoring match at Colombo. When India posted a first innings score of 537, Sri Lanka hit back with 952/6 declared. After losing Atapattu early, opener Jayasuriya joined hands with Roshan Mahaname to put on 576 runs for the 2nd wicket. Jayasuriya went on to score a triple century and ended with 340 runs under his name. His wicket fell when the scorecard read 615 runs. His partner Mahanama was dismissed in the previous over for a score of 225 as he was trapped in front of the stumps by Anil Kumble who broke the record partnership.
<h4>1. Kumar Sangakkara &amp; Mahela Jayawardene &#8211; 624 v South Africa</h4>

The numero uno spot also goes to the modern day warriors of Sri Lankan cricket, Jayawardene, and Sangakkara who were the mainstay of Sri Lankan cricket for the last couple of decades. In the first Test against South Africa in 2006 at Colombo, Sri Lanka was struggling at 14/2 in reply to South Africa’s score of 169 in the first innings. Sanga and Jaya put on 624 runs on the board for the third wicket, a record which is very unlikely to be broken. The partnership was broken by Andrew Hall when he dismissed Sangakkara on 287. While Sanga was unlucky to miss out on a triple ton, Jayawardene wasn’t lucky either as he missed out on an opportunity to score 400. He was bowled by Andre Nel for 374 runs. Sri Lanka went on to win the match by an innings and 153 runs.
