Top 10 Highest Partnerships in the IPL: Cricket is a game of partnerships. Be it at the front of bowling or batting, coupled efforts are what give the opposition real reasons to worry. Big Partnerships in batting effectively break the back of the opposition. Generally it requires one player to play the sheet anchor’s role while the other takes the game by the scruff of its neck. While building partnerships in the IPL the batters job might get a little tougher if the players are from different countries. But despite such constraints, shorter boundaries and flatter pitches have meant that here have been many big partnerships in the IPL. Here we take a look at the Top 10 Highest Partnerships in the IPL. 10. Kumar Sangakkara and Cameron White (157): Kumar Sangakara and Cameron White DC. (Photo Source: BCCI) The left-handed Sri Lankan great Sangakkara and Aussie all-rounder White together made 157 runs for the third wicket playing against the Pune Warriors in Cuttack. They achieved the feat for the Deccan Chargers in the 2012 season. While Sanga is all about timing, White represents power with composure. It is ironical that both of them are not playing in any IPL team now as they went unsold in the auctions. 9. Michael Hussey and M Vijay (159): Murali Vijay with Michael Hussey CSK. (Photo Source: BCCI) In 2011, Mike Hussey and M Vijay made 159 runs against the Royal Challengers Bangalore for the first wicket. Playing at their home ground Chepauk, the Super Kings pair launched a rather harsh attack on the RCB bowlers that day. Vijay and Mr. Cricket Hussey were very successful at the top of the order for CSK before going to other teams in the subsequent auctions. Being a left-right combo, they always gave the bowlers a tough time in the middle. 8. The partnership came against the Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur. Sachin made 58* while smith made 87*. They both played for Mumbai Indians that time but now Smith has moved to CSK and Sachin has retired from all formats. 7. Chris Gayle and Tillakaratne Dilshan (167): Dilshan and Chris Gayle were involved in a stand of 167 runs. (Photo Source: BCCI) Dilshan and Chris Gayle were involved in a stand of 167 runs for the 1st wicket playing against Pune Warriors in 2013. The partnership came in the high scoring Chinnaswamy Stadium of Bengaluru in 2013. Opening the batting both Gayle and Dilshan looked in destructive mood from ball one. The effort was a treat to watch for the Bangalore viewers. 6. Herschelle Gibbs and Rohit Sharma (167*): Gibbs and Rohit Sharma together made 167* partnership in 2012. It was by any standards one of the best partnerships of IPL considering Kolkata’s dominant home record. The pair also ensured that the morale of the KKR side took a serious hit. Gibbs made 66* while Sharma made 109*. 5. David Warner and Naman Ojha (189*): Naman Ojha and David Warner scored 189* together. (Photo Source: Hindustan Times) Naman Ojha and David Warner scored 189* together for the second wicket in 2012 edition of IPL. Playing against the Deccan chargers, the duo accounted for the second wicket stand in Hyderabad. The then Delhi teammates interestingly went to the Sunrisers Hyderabad team in the subsequent auction when the Deccan Chargers had to sell their shares. Warner made a century while Ojha remained not out on 64. 4. Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli (204*): Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli scored 204* together. (Photo Source: BCCI) Chris Gayle and Virat Kohli scored 204* together playing against DD in 2012 for the 2nd wicket at Ferozshah Kotla. While Christopher Henry Gayle literally manhandled the bowlers, Kohli quietly kept doing the work at hand. The daredevils bowlers kept looking for cover as both of them smashed the ball to all parts of the ground both Gayle and Kohli remained unbeaten on 128 and 73 respectively. 3. Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh (206*): Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh. (Photo Source: BCCI) Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh had the time of their life with a partnership of 206 runs against the RCB at Dharamsala in 2011. Gilli made 106 while Marsh remained unbeaten on 79. Both left-handers, playing for the Kings XI Punjab were too hot to handle for the Bangalore side that day. RCB in return succumbed to scoreboard pressure and didn’t come close. 2. Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers (215*): Virat Kohli and Ab de Villiers RCB. (Photo Source: BCCI) For 4 years the record for the highest partnership was held by Gilchrist and Marsh before AB and Kohli joined hands at Mumbai and destroyed the home team’s attack, adding incredible 215 runs and remaining unbeaten. AB made a century (133* off 59) while Kohli contributed 82* off 50 balls. Rohit Sharma the Mumbai skipper simply had no answers to the level of stroke play displayed by these two at the Wankhede. Despite putting up an impressive 196 while chasing, Mumbai lost by a comprehensive margin of 39 runs. 1. Wearing the green jersey marking the go green initiative, AB de Villiers walked out in the middle after RCB lost the struggling Chris Gayle in the 4th over. What followed next was an absolute massacre which shattered the record books completely. The marvellous batsmen went on to slam the 5th fastest century of the IPL. And, along with skipper Virat Kohli, forged a mammoth 229 runs stand to propel RCB to a massive 248/3 after 20 overs. De Villiers remained unconquered till the end and returned to the pavilion with 129 runs off just 52 balls against his name. (All stats updated till 15th May 2016)
