When it comes to T20 cricket, the success of Indian team is often attributed to the spinners in the side who choke the opposition in the middle overs. India is certainly not known for posting huge totals on the board but have still managed to create moments of glory; most amazing one being ICC World T20 in 2007. But now, Indian batsmen have started catching up and India are now among the big run machines of T20 cricket as well. Here are the top 10 highest totals for India in T20Is:

When India played Sri Lanka at Nagpur in the first T20 of the two match series in 2009, Sri Lanka posted a mammoth 215 on the board. Kumar Sangakkara’s 37-ball 78 set the tone for the visitors in the game. India, in response, could manage just 186/9 in their stipulated 20 overs and lost by 29 runs. A handy 55 off 26 balls from Gambhir in the top gave India a flying start but no other batsman could capitalize.

India had a brilliant run in the 3-match T20 series against Australia Down Under. India created history by whitewashing Australia in Australia. During the first match of the series, India were given a flying start by Rohit Sharma, who scored 31 off 20 balls. But the star of the show was Virat Kohli, who remained unbeaten on 90 off 55 balls to guide India to a total of 188/3. A crucial knock of 41 by Raina supported Kohli well. The Aussies in the run chase looked unsettled after the loss of their openers and could never recover. They were bundled out for 151 to give India a 37-run win.

During the 2nd semi-final of the inaugural edition of the ICC World T20, India faced stiff competition from Australia. Batting first, India lost Sehwag cheaply. Gambhir (24) and Uthappa (34) made crucial contributions before Yuvraj Singh took matter in his hands. His swashbuckling innings of 70 off just 30 balls took India to a gigantic score of 188/5. He was well supported by MS Dhoni’s 36. The Aussies came very close to the target, riding on Hayden’s 62, but fell short by 15 runs.

After losing the first T20I match of the two match series, India were put into bat in the second match at Mohali in 2012. Openers Gambhir and Rahane provided a steady start and Kohli got going too. But it was Yuvraj Singh who top scored with 72 off 36 balls and MS Dhoni finished off with a 23-ball 33. India were propelled to 192/5 at the end of 20 overs. Owing to Jamshed’s 41 and Hafeez’s 55, Pakistan got close to the target but fell short by 11 runs.

During Sri Lanka’s tour to India in 2016, India received a shocker as they were dismissed for 101 in the first match. Playing at Ranchi in the second game, Indian batsmen got back to form and played as the number one side. Shikhar Dhawan hit a cracking 51 off 25 balls and Rohit Sharma struck 43 off 36. Some exceptional hitting towards the ends by Hardik Pandya and Suresh Raina saw India finish at 196/6. Sri Lanka were never in the chase and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. He built his innings with ease and scored a magnificent 106 off 66 balls. He was supported by Kohli (43) and MS Dhoni (20*) as India finished just one short of 200. Australia were led by the stand-in skipper Shane Watson in the 3rd T20I at Sydney during India’s tour to Australia in 2016. Watson led from the front and scored a flamboyant 124* to singlehandedly take his side to a total of 197/5 in 20 overs. But India chased down the target with 7 wickets in hand and crafted one of the greatest T20 wins. With the win, India whitewashed Australia 3-0. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli struck fifties while it was Suresh Raina’s unbeaten 49 that took India to the victory.

The match between India and England in the inaugural edition of the World T20 went down in the history books as the match when Yuvraj Singh hit 6 sixes in an over off Stuart Broad to become the first man on the planet to do so in T20Is. <p>The match between India and England in the inaugural edition of the World T20 went down in the history books as the match when Yuvraj Singh hit 6 sixes in an over off Stuart Broad to become the first man on the planet to do so in T20Is. India batted first in the match played at Durban, as openers Sehwag (68) and Gambhir (58) provided India a solid foundation. But the star of the show was Yuvraj Singh as he smacked 58 off just 16 balls to propel India to their highest ever T20I score then, 218/4, in 20 overs. The English batsmen fought hard but could only muster 200/6 by the end of their 20 overs and India won by 18 runs.</p>

<p>When it comes to T20 cricket, the success of Indian team is often attributed to the spinners in the side who choke the opposition in the middle overs. India is certainly not known for posting huge totals on the board but have still managed to create moments of glory; most amazing one being ICC World T20 in 2007. But now, Indian batsmen have started catching up and India are now among the big run machines of T20 cricket as well. Here are the top 10 highest totals for India in T20Is:</p>
<h4><strong>10. 186/9 v Sri Lanka in 2009:</strong></h4>

<p>When India played Sri Lanka at Nagpur in the first T20 of the two match series in 2009, Sri Lanka posted a mammoth 215 on the board. Kumar Sangakkara’s 37-ball 78 set the tone for the visitors in the game. India, in response, could manage just 186/9 in their stipulated 20 overs and lost by 29 runs. A handy 55 off 26 balls from Gambhir in the top gave India a flying start but no other batsman could capitalize.</p>
<h4><strong>9. 188/3 v Australia in 2016:</strong></h4>

<p>India had a brilliant run in the 3-match T20 series against Australia Down Under. India created history by whitewashing Australia in Australia. During the first match of the series, India were given a flying start by Rohit Sharma, who scored 31 off 20 balls. But the star of the show was Virat Kohli, who remained unbeaten on 90 off 55 balls to guide India to a total of 188/3. A crucial knock of 41 by Raina supported Kohli well. The Aussies in the run chase looked unsettled after the loss of their openers and could never recover. They were bundled out for 151 to give India a 37-run win.</p>

<p>During the 2nd semi-final of the inaugural edition of the ICC World T20, India faced stiff competition from Australia. Batting first, India lost Sehwag cheaply. Gambhir (24) and Uthappa (34) made crucial contributions before Yuvraj Singh took matter in his hands. His swashbuckling innings of 70 off just 30 balls took India to a gigantic score of 188/5. He was well supported by MS Dhoni’s 36. The Aussies came very close to the target, riding on Hayden’s 62, but fell short by 15 runs.</p>
<h4><strong>7. 192/5 v Pakistan in 2012:</strong></h4>

<p>After losing the first T20I match of the two match series, India were put into bat in the second match at Mohali in 2012. Openers Gambhir and Rahane provided a steady start and Kohli got going too. But it was Yuvraj Singh who top scored with 72 off 36 balls and MS Dhoni finished off with a 23-ball 33. India were propelled to 192/5 at the end of 20 overs. Owing to Jamshed’s 41 and Hafeez’s 55, Pakistan got close to the target but fell short by 11 runs.</p>
<h4><strong>6. 196/6 v Sri Lanka in 2016:</strong></h4>

<p>During Sri Lanka’s tour to India in 2016, India received a shocker as they were dismissed for 101 in the first match. Playing at Ranchi in the second game, Indian batsmen got back to form and played as the number one side. Shikhar Dhawan hit a cracking 51 off 25 balls and Rohit Sharma struck 43 off 36. Some exceptional hitting towards the ends by Hardik Pandya and Suresh Raina saw India finish at 196/6. Sri Lanka were never in the chase and kept losing wickets at regular intervals. The Islanders were restricted to 127/9 in 20 overs and India won by 69 runs.</p>

<p>When India played South Africa at Dharamsala in 2015, Rohit Sharma scripted history by becoming only the second Indian to score a century in T20I cricket. He built his innings with ease and scored a magnificent 106 off 66 balls. He was supported by Kohli (43) and MS Dhoni (20*) as India finished just one short of 200. However, Rohit’s ton went in vain as South Africa, led superbly by AB de Villiers (51) and Duminy (68*), chased the scored with 7 wickets in hand and two balls to spare.</p>

<p>Australia were led by the stand-in skipper Shane Watson in the 3rd T20I at Sydney during India’s tour to Australia in 2016. Watson led from the front and scored a flamboyant 124* to singlehandedly take his side to a total of 197/5 in 20 overs. But India chased down the target with 7 wickets in hand and crafted one of the greatest T20 wins. With the win, India whitewashed Australia 3-0. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli struck fifties while it was Suresh Raina’s unbeaten 49 that took India to the victory.</p>

<p>During the only T20I match between India and Australia at Rajkot in 2013, Yuvraj Singh helped India chase down a mammoth 201 with 6 wickets to spare. Yuvraj hit a swashbuckling 77 off just 35 balls to help India overhaul one of the toughest targets they have chased down with 2 balls to spare. Earlier in the day, Australia posted 201 on the board, riding on Aaron Finch’s 89 that came off 52 balls.</p>

Batting first, the Islanders posted a huge 206 on the board as Kumar Sangakkara and Jayasinghe scored 59 and 38 respectively. The Indian run chase started in brisk fashion as Virender Sehwag hit a brutal 64 off 36 balls, and MS Dhoni, coming in at number 3, hit 46 off 48. Yuvraj Singh remained unbeaten on 60 off just 25 balls, hitting 5 sixes, to steer India to one of the <strong><a href="http://www.crictracker.com/top-10-highest-successful-run-chases-in-t20-internationals/" target="_blank">highest successful run chases in T20I history.</a></strong></p>
