Top 10 Most successful captains in international Cricket: A captain always needs to lead the team from the front with his contributions and tactical decisions to become successful. But only few captains have stood out ahead, irrespective of the format they have led their teams in. They might be successful because of having a good team, that they have built or the decisions they made at a particular point of the game. Here we look at the Top 10 Most successful captains in international Cricket i.e. captains with most wins in all forms of the game: 10. Arjuna Ranatunga (Sri Lanka) – 101 wins: Arjuna Ranatunga. He led his side to 101 wins in all forms of cricket out of the 249 matches he acted as captain with 89 of those coming in the ODI format including a World Cup title in 1996 and other 12 wins in the Test format. He led his side to 98 wins at decent win/loss ratio of 1.46. Mahela also captained Asia XI in 3 ODIs and his side won all the 3 games. He led Sri Lanka to 68 ODI wins, 18 Test wins, equally most by a Sri Lanka captain; along with 12 wins in T20Is. 8. Mohammad Azharuddin (India) – 104 wins: Mohammad Azharuddin. Out of the 104 wins, 90 came in 174 ODI matches whereas the remaining 14 came in Test Cricket. 7. Steve Waugh (Australia) – 108 wins: Steve Waugh. However, he remains one of the best captains ever that the game has seen. Waugh led his side to 108 wins in 163 game at a win/loss ratio of 2.45. Waugh led Australia to 41 test wins in 57 matches at a win/loss ratio of 4.56; the highest for any Test captain who has led in at least 50 games. Under Cronje, South Africa won 27 tests in 53 matches and 99 ODIs out of 138 matches at a win/loss ratio of 2.82, the 2nd best win/loss rate for a captain who has been the captain in at least 100 ODIs. 5. He led his side to 163 wins in 286 matches in the 11 years of his captaincy. Smith led his side to 92 wins in ODIs out of 150 matches and 53 wins in Test cricket, the most by any other captain in Test history. Easily Dhoni is India’s most successful captain by being the only skipper to lead his side to World Cup, World T20 and Champions Trophy titles. He led India to 178 wins in the 331 matches with 110 ODI wins coming in 199 matches and 27 Test wins came from the 60 matches he captained. In T20Is, under Dhoni, India has 42 wins, the most by any captain in the shortest format. 1. Ricky Ponting (Australia) – 220 wins: Ricky Ponting. He led Australia in 324 matches at a win/loss ratio of 2.857 to 220 wins. Ponting led Australia to 48 Test wins in 77 matches at a win loss ratio of 3. As ODI captain, he was on the winning side on 165 times out of 225 matches, the most wins for any captain in ODIs. One of his ODI wins came for ICC World XI against Asia XI.
