Top 10 Most Successful Captains in IPL: Success is considered as one of the major parameters in determining the best. Cricket is no exception to it. Here, the skippers with most number of wins for their respective teams are considered to be the best. However, to be honest, there can be exceptions as in this particular game, there lies the faintest line between victories and defeats. This article focuses upon the Top 10 Most Successful Captains in IPL. This article is based on statistics with win percentage being the deciding factor and a captain with minimum 30 matches as a captain is considered as a constraint. Let’s get onto it. 10. Rahul Dravid captained RCB in the very first edition of IPL which was not a successful campaign. But since he was appointed as the captain of Rajasthan Royals in 2011, he led his side brilliantly and extracted the best out of young talents in the likes of Sanju Samson, Ajinkya Rahane, Stuart Binny and others. He captained his side for 48 matches and won 22 of them. This makes his win percentage 45.83%, which is considerably descent owing to the unpredictable nature of the game. 9. Adam Gilchrist – 47.29 % Adam Gilchrist KXIP. (Photo Source:AFP) The former Australian wicket keeper batsman was an inspiring leader. He led Deccan Chargers to triumph in 2009 IPL. From IPL 3 to IPL 6, he captained Kings XI Punjab and he assembled young talents to frame a strong team. With domestic uncapped players, he made Punjab a really strong side to beat. Gilchrist captained for a total of 74 IPL matches and has won 35 off them, owing to a win percentage of 47.29%. 8. Yuvraj Singh – 50.00% Yuvraj Singh. Yuvraj Singh the man who fought cancer showed his intent bravery with his captaincy too. He captained the side on 43 occasions and won 21 of them, with one match being abandoned. This draws his win percentage to 50%. 7. Virat Kohli – 50.00% Virat Kohli RCB. (Photo Source: BCCI) One can feel the pressure of leading a side jam packed with dynamites of Cricket in the likes of Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Muttiah Muralitharan, Yuvraj Singh, Mitchell Starc and others. Yet, the Indian test captain has managed things quite well for RCB. Virat Kohli has captained his side for 72 matches so far and has won 36 of them, 2 of them were ties and the remaining 3 were abandoned. This makes his win percentage 50.00%. Kohli has proved himself to be a mature captain and is capable of taking responsibilities and possess the X-factor of leading the side from the front. 6. And that particular instinct of his reflected on his captaincy as well. ‘The Sultan of Multan’ has captained his side on 53 occasions and won 28 of them, thus making a win percentage of 53.77%. Under his captaincy, Delhi Daredevils qualified for the play-offs twice. They also managed to be the table toppers in IPL 5. 5. Shane Warne – 55.45% Shane Warne RR. (Photo Source: BCCI) The former captain of Rajasthan Royals, the legendary spinner Shane Warne captained his side for 55 matches and they were victorious in 30 of them, thus contributing his win percentage to be 55.45%. Warne led his side well and much of his success came due to his reliability upon young talents, especially the uncapped players. 4. Gautam Gambhir – 56.50% Gautam Gambhir kkr. The team plays like a unit under his leadership and he led his side well to seal 60 victories out of 106 matches, with a win percentage of 56.50%. Prior to KKR, Gambhir captained DD for a season or two. KKR were crowned the champions in 2012 and 2014. Under his leadership, KKR holds the record for most number of matches without losing with 10 wins on a trot. 3. The holder of a sea of records in Cricket also makes into this list with 30 wins out of 51 games for Mumbai Indians. He thus has a win percentage of 58.82%. For Mumbai Indians side, he has been less of a captain and more of a leader. The Master Blaster led the side right from the front and players like Rohit Sharma, Ambati Rayudu and others learnt a lot from him. Sachin took his side to the final in 2010 when they were defeated by CSK. 2. Mahendra Singh Dhoni – 58.04% MS Dhoni. (Photo Source: BCCI) Well, this is no surprise. Captain Cool from CSK & RPSG finds his name on top of the list with an incredibly good track record as the skipper. He has captained his side on 143 occasions and emerged victorious in 83 of them, which draws his win percentage to something as fascinating as 58.04%. CSK has been the most consistent side and they have played the IPL final for as many as 5 times. 1. Rohit Sharma – 58.62% Rohit Sharma MI. (Photo Source: BCCI) He has been one of the most successful captains for Mumbai Indians and MI won the champions in the first season that he took over as captain of the team. Rohit has secured 34 victories out of 58 matches for his team, with a win percentage of 58.62%.
