Top 10 Oldest Players to Score a Test Ton: Over the years many legends have defied the usual and common perceptions related to age. These legends had the courage and iron will to overcome the age factor and to do truly remarkable things. Sachin Tendulkar was 39 when he hit his 100th international ton. Recently West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul scored a century against Bangladesh during their two match series in the Caribbean Islands. He achieved this when he was 40.28 years old. But it’s surprising that it only made him the 16th oldest player to hold this peculiar record. Let’s have a look at the oldest players to score a test ton. The Top 10 Oldest Players to Score a Test Ton. 10. HW Taylor (41 years 241 days, 117 vs England): Herbert Wilfred Taylor was a South African cricketer who played 42 Tests for his century. He became the first South African to pass 2,500 Test runs. Taylor’s greatest achievement is generally reckoned to be scoring 508 runs at an average of 50.80 in the 1913-14 test series against England. He scored 2,863 runs at an average of 38.68, including six centuries, and took 87 wickets. He was inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame in 2000. His captaincy record is quite impressive as he was undefeated, winning 8 tests and drawing 2. He captained the Australian side which won the Ashes series 5-0. Simpson made a comeback after a decade in retirement to captain New South Wales and Australia at the age of 41. He also did an exceptional job as a coach of the Australian side that won the 1987 WC, the 1989 Ashes series and defeated the mighty West Indies on their home soil in 1995. 6 EAB Rowan (42 years 6 days, 236 vs England): Eric Alfred Burchell Rowan was a South African opening batsman. He was known for his cocky attitude on and off the field. Rowan reached triple figures while he was 42 years and 6 days old. He sometimes batted without gloves and, allegedly, without a “box” protector and he was fearless against authority too. He topped both the Test and the first-class averages and his feats led to him being named as a Wisden Cricketer of the the following year. 5. He played 64 tests for his country scoring 3283 runs and 83 wickets. He scored hundred runs against South Africa (154) while he was 42 years and 61 days old. 4. AW Nourse (42 years 291 days, 111 vs Australia): Arthur William “Dave” Nourse was a left- handed South African batsman. He has played 45 tests scoring 2234 runs with a decent average of 29.78. He also took 41 wickets during his test career. It’s interesting that his 111 against Australia at 42 years and 291 days was his only ton and it made its entry into the record books. 3. Bardsley became the first Test cricketer to score a century – 100 runs or more – in both innings of a single Test match. His undefeated innings of 193 at Lord’s in the Second Test would be his highest Test score, and made him the oldest player to score a Test century for Australia. He has scored 3525 runs in 51 tests averaging 47.63. He has the third highest First Class aggregate with 57,611 runs and his total of 170 centuries ranks second only to Hobbs. EW Swanton described him in 1963 as “a supreme master of his craft and the undisputed head of his profession”.
