Top 10 Players who have been run out most times in ODIs: Run outs are an important part of Cricket. They could either be the most hilarious ways to get out or if it’s your team is on the receiving end, it could as well be one of the most frustrating things on the cricket pitch. Just ask a batsman who has battered the early storm of some ferocious fast bowling and now is looking to score some runs off the spinners and part-timers and suddenly, out of the blue, gets run out in the middle! Since it very much depends on a batsman’s judgment, his pace running between the wickets and on the fielder he is challenging, run-outs are an uncertain form of dismissal to a great extent. Here are the Top 10 Players who have been run out most times in ODIs: 10. Ricky Ponting – 31 Times: Ricky Ponting. (© Getty Images) When it comes to Ricky Ponting, most of us remember a player with the best hook shot under his belt. A ferocious, quite possibly the best Captain ever, Ponting was known for his aggression and shrewd tactics. Maybe if you are an Indian fan, you would remember that famous spell from Ishanth Sharma at Perth? Regardless, Ponting always had this tendency to struggle with his running between the wickets. Maybe it was the aggression or too much confidence that succumbed Ponting to get run out, 31 times in his ODI career. It was even more surprising because Ponting was a great athlete, one of the best fielders in his prime, he was fast and reflexive, and he certainly didn’t deserve to be on this list. (Photo Source: Getty Images) Mark Waugh, another Aussie, though, slightly less surprising entry than the previous one. And they say Aussies were the fittest players in the World Cricket! On a serious note, though, Mark was never as fast or athletic as someone like Ricky Ponting. A solid batsman top of the order, the elder among the Waugh brothers was not the greatest runner on the pitch. A trait that was shared by both the brothers, Steve Waugh was notorious for running out his partners while, Mark Waugh managed to get himself run out more often than not. 8. Mohammad Azharuddin – 32 Times: Mohammad Azharuddin. (© Getty Images) As an Indian, you know he had to be on this list! Mohammad Azharuddin was probably one of the slowest runners between the wickets in the Indian team. Gifted with magical wrists, the then Indian Captain had the ability to play the most stylish of shots you would ever see. His flicks were world famous, and he was a treat to watch, even for a neutral fan. But, for his running partner, as it turns out, not so much! 7. Sachin Tendulkar – 34 Times: Sachin Tendulkar. (Photo Source: Getty Images) While, not necessarily a struggler in between the wickets, with Sachin, it’s more of the case that he has played so many innings in ODI Cricket, he was bound to get run out a few times. A fast and athletic runner on the pitch, Sachin never really struggled with the run-out issues, but as I said, with the number of One Day Internationals he has played over the years, it’s no surprise that he made it to this list. Maybe that was the only possible way to get out the God of Cricket when he was at his prime. 6. Mohammad Yousuf – 38 Times: Mohammad Yousuf. (© Getty Images) Mohammad Yousuf or Yousuf Yohana as he was known previously is one of the most deserved candidates on this list. The Pakistani batsman was a gifted player capable of playing marathon innings for his team. But, if there was one thing he lacked, it was speed and athleticism. A nightmare for his running partner, Yousuf would manage to run out his partner probably as often as himself. As an opposition fan, it was always hilarious to watch him and Inzamam bat together in the middle. Who would get run out first was probably anyone’s guess! 5. Wasim Akram – 38 Times: Wasim Akram. (Photo Source: Reuters) Another Pakistani! Are you getting the feeling too that this list is mostly just comprised of sub-continent players? We have already seen a couple of Indian and Pakistanis. Wasim Akram is another name in the long list of Pakistanis who were slow/bad runners in between wickets. The fact that he batted so low down the order and still managed to get himself run out 38 times is an achievement in itself! 4. Mahela Jayawardene – 39 Times: Mahela Jayawardene. (© Getty Images) The Sri- Lankans were mostly known to be fitter and more athletic than the Indians and Pakistanis in the older times. Of course, things are different now, but 10 years ago, Lankans were more foreign in terms of their fielding and fitness than sub-continent. Having just retired from international cricket, Mahela, though, was never the fastest runner on the pitch. A very good slip fielder, Jayawardene was athletic but certainly not the quickest. Having played so many ODI games, there’s little surprise he made it to this list. 3. Inzamam Ul-Haq – 40 Times: Inzamam-ul-Haq. (© Getty Images) I bet you are thinking how is Inzi not at the top of this list, right? Well, believe me, I was as surprised as you were when I looked at the numbers. Sure, he is number 3, but over the years, run outs and some hilarious running between the wickets have become so synonymous with Inzamam, that you expect him to be topping this list. Still, 40 is not a bad number for someone of Inzi’s caliber, right? A bit overweight, Inzamam’s batting talent and leadership remain unmatched in Pakistan cricket. However, I bet you would find some of the funniest and most hilarious run outs involving this man. There was a reason he was known as Aloo (Potato) among his teammates! 2. Rahul Dravid – 40 Times: Rahul Dravid (Photo Source: PA Photos) International bowlers, over the years, realized that it is quite impossible to break Dravid’s solid Wall of defense, so the easier way probably is to get him run-out maybe? One of the best batsmen in world cricket ever, Rahul Dravid, was known for his grit, determination, and technique. Although, one thing, he was never really known for was his running between the wickets. The Karnataka batsman was never the one for quick singles and managed to make the second position on our list. Although, I would imagine that an opposition bowler would be the happier to see Dravid getting run out than any other batsman in the world. 1. Marvan Atapattu – 42 Times: Marvan Atapattu. There’s also this theory that the sub-continent players play more ODI’s than an Australian or an Englishman. Maybe that is also one of the reasons we see so many Lankans, Indians and Pakistanis on the list. Marvan Atapattu was another Lankan and probably one of the slowest runners in the Lankan side. Known for his good technique and patience, Atapattu tops our list of the players who have been run-out most times in ODIs.
