T20 format was invented by the English Cricket Board or the ECB in 2003, in order to increase the number of fans in the ground. The International Cricket Council or the ICC saw potential in the format and the very first T20 international was played between Australia and New Zealand in 2005.

The very first ICC World T20 was played in 2007 in South Africa, which was won by India. The year 2008 saw the inception of the Indian Premier League or the IPL, which had international players playing together for franchisees and since then, the T20 format has become a money maker for the cricket boards.

Not all countries adopted the format easily and hence have very poor records in the format or have played very less matches in the international T20 format. But here are the top 10 teams with most losses in T20 internationals so far.

India played their very first T20 international in 2006 against South Africa. Since then, they have been reluctant to play in this format internationally, despite being the home to the most popular T20 league in the IPL.

Since 2006, India has played 79 matches and has won 46 of them and lost 30 of them. India’s biggest success came in the form of the ICC World T20 title in the inaugural tournament in 2007, when MS Dhoni’s team beat Pakistan in the finals to win the championship and thus becoming the first team to win both the 20 over World Cup and the 60 over World Cup in 1983. They added the 50 over World Cup to their kitty in 2011.

India’s highest T20I score of 218 came against England in the ICC World T20 2007 in Durban, a match where Yuvraj Singh hit 6 sixes in 6 consecutive balls in an over, bowled by Stuart Broad. India’s lowest score of 74 came against Australia in 2008 in the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

The highest individual score for India is 106 by Rohit Sharma and best bowling is 4/21 by Pragyan Ojha.

The West Indies have played 82 T20I matches and have won 39 of them and lost 37, with 3 matches tied and 2 no results. They played their first T20I match in 2006 and played in the very first World T20 match against South Africa in 2007.

West Indies’ highest team total in T20I is 236/6 against South Africa, which is also the highest team total in a successful chase in a T20I match. Their lowest team total is 101. The highest individual score for West Indies was made by Chris Gayle, who smoked 117 in the 2007 World T20 opener against South Africa. The best bowling figures record is held by Darren Sammy who took 5/26 against Zimbabwe in 2010.

South Africa played its first T20I in 2005 and has played 94 matches since then. They have won 55 matches and lost 38 of them. South Africa hosted the very first ICC World T20 in 2007 and is a constant threat in every competition they take part in. Recently they whitewashed India 3-0 in India in the T20 format.

Their highest score of 241/6 came against England in Centurion, while their lowest score of 100 came against Pakistan in Centurion in 2013. Faf du Plessis holds the record for the highest individual score for South Africa, scoring 119* against West Indies in a losing cause. While Ryan McLaren holds the record for best bowling with 5/19 coming against West Indies in 2010.

7. Sri Lanka &#8211; 40

Sri Lanka plays a lot of T20Is and it reflects in their results as well. They have played 90 T20Is till date and have won 48 of them and lost 40, the rest of them been no results. The highest team score for Sri Lanka is 260/6 against Kenya in the ICC World T20 2007 and their lowest score is 87 against Australia in 2010. The highest individual score for them is 104* by Tillakaratne Dilshan and best bowling figures are 6/8 by Ajantha Mendis.

Sri Lanka incidentally holds the record for highest team totals in all the three international cricket formats. They scored 952/6 in a Test innings against India in 1997, 443/9 in an ODI innings against the Netherlands in 2006 and 260/6 in a T20I innings against Kenya in 2007.

Zimbabwe has played a total of 54 T20 internationals and has won just 13 matches. They have lost 40 matches with one match being tied. They made their T20 debut in 2006 and since then have been struggling in general to play cricket due to poor administration and political environment in Zimbabwe.

Their highest score is of 200/2 against New Zealand in Hamilton in 2012 and the lowest score of 84 came against New Zealand in 2010. The highest individual score for Zimbabwe is 93* by Hamilton Masakadza and the best bowling figures are 4/37 by Tinashe Panyangara.

The best moment for Zimbabwe in T20Is came when they upset the mighty Australians in the inaugural ICC World T20 in 2007. Zimbabwe restricted Australia to 138 and then reached the target with 1 ball remaining, Brendan Taylor top scoring with 60* and causing a great shock win in the inaugural World Cup of T20 format.

Surprisingly the team to lose the most T20 internationals is New Zealand. The Kiwis played their first T20 international in 2005, against Australia, which was also the very first T20 international ever played. Since then, they have played 96 T20Is and lost a record 40 of them and won 49 matches.

Their highest score in the format is 214/6 against Australia at Christchurch in 2010 and the lowest of 60 came against Sri Lanka in the ICC World T20 in 2014, when they couldn’t chase down 119, thanks to Rangana Herath’s career best 5/3.

The highest individual score for New Zealand is 123 by Brendon McCullum, against Bangladesh in 2012. The best bowling in the format is by Tim Southee who took 5/18 against Pakistan in 2010. The Kiwis have probably the best T20 batsmen in Brendon McCullum and Martin Guptill, both of whom are known for their devastating hitting capabilities. Brendon McCullum is the only batsman in the world with more than one century in the T20 international format.

The inventors of not only the T20 format but the game of cricket, England have played 90 T20 matches and have lost 41 of them. They have won 44 matches and 1 has been ended in a tie. Their highest score in T20I has been 214/7 against New Zealand at Auckland in 2013. Their lowest score of 80 came against India at Colombo in the ICC World T20 2012.

Their highest individual score is of 116* by Alex Hales against Sri Lanka in the 2014 ICC World T20 and best bowling figures is 4/10 by Ravi Bopara against West Indies in 2011. England has won the ICC World T20 in 2010, held in West Indies, defeating rivals Australia in the finals. This is their only ICC trophy in their vast history of cricket.

Australia have played 90 T20I matches, including the first ever T20I in 2005. They have won 46 and lost 41 matches. Australia is also one of the most dangerous sides in the format and reached finals of the ICC World T20 in 2010, where they were defeated by England.

Australia’s highest team score is 263. Their lowest score is 79 against England in Southampton in 2005. The highest score for Australia in T20Is is 156 by Aaron Finch against England, which is also the highest individual score in all T20 internationals. The best bowling figures for the Aussies are by Shane Watson, who took 4/15 against England in 2011 in Adelaide.

Australia won the first ever T20 international in 2005 and was the first team to score 200 in the format in the same match in 2005.

Pakistan has been the most prolific team in T20I format and has played the maximum 110 matches so far. They have won 64 of those matches and lost just 43. The Pakistani team has played T20Is all over the world and against almost every possible opponent, having made their T20I debut in 2006.

Their highest team total is 203/5 against Bangladesh in 2008. Their lowest score of 74 came against Australia in 2012 in Dubai. Ahmed Shehzad holds the highest individual score record for Pakistan with his 111* against Bangladesh in the ICC World T20 2014. Umar Gul’s 5/6 (two times) is the best bowling figures for Pakistan achieved against South Africa in 2013 and against New Zealand in 2009, which was also the first 5 wicket haul by any bowler in T20 internationals.

Pakistan won the ICC World T20 tournament in 2009 in England and had also reached the finals of the 2007 edition, only to lose to India. They also participated in the first ever tied match in World T20 tournaments in the same edition, against India and lost that match in the bowl out.

They played their first T20I in 2006 and despite playing against both top teams and associate nations, still have to show the signs of improvement that a test playing nation should show in the shortest version of the game.

The highest individual score for Bangladesh in T20I was scored by Nazimuddin, who scored 81 against Pakistan in 2007. Pakistan has been the most prolific team in T20I format and has played the maximum 110 matches so far. They have won 64 of those matches and lost just 43. The Pakistani team has played T20Is all over the world and against almost every possible opponent, having made their T20I debut in 2006.
Their highest team total is 203/5 against Bangladesh in 2008. Their lowest score of 74 came against Australia in 2012 in Dubai. Ahmed Shehzad holds the highest individual score record for Pakistan with his 111* against Bangladesh in the ICC World T20 2014. Umar Gul’s 5/6 (two times) is the best bowling figures for Pakistan achieved against South Africa in 2013 and against New Zealand in 2009, which was also the first 5 wicket haul by any bowler in T20 internationals.

Not all countries adopted the format easily and hence have very poor records in the format or have played very less matches in the international T20 format. But here are the top 10 teams with most losses in T20 internationals so far.

India played their very first T20 international in 2006 against South Africa. Since then, they have been reluctant to play in this format internationally, despite being the home to the most popular T20 league in the IPL.
Since 2006, India has played 79 matches and has won 46 of them and lost 30 of them. India’s biggest success came in the form of the ICC World T20 title in the inaugural tournament in 2007, when MS Dhoni’s team beat Pakistan in the finals to win the championship and thus becoming the first team to win both the 20 over World Cup and the 60 over World Cup in 1983. They added the 50 over World Cup to their kitty in 2011.
India’s highest T20I score of 218 came against England in the ICC World T20 2007 in Durban, a match where Yuvraj Singh hit 6 sixes in 6 consecutive balls in an over, bowled by Stuart Broad. India’s lowest score of 74 came against Australia in 2008 in the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The highest individual score for India is 106 by Rohit Sharma and best bowling is 4/21 by Pragyan Ojha.

The West Indies have played 82 T20I matches and have won 39 of them and lost 37, with 3 matches tied and 2 no results. They played their first T20I match in 2006 and played in the very first World T20 match against South Africa in 2007.
West Indies’ highest team total in T20I is 236/6 against South Africa, which is also the highest team total in a successful chase in a T20I match. Their lowest team total is 101. The highest individual score for West Indies was made by Chris Gayle, who smoked 117 in the 2007 World T20 opener against South Africa. The best bowling figures record is held by Darren Sammy who took 5/26 against Zimbabwe in 2010.

South Africa played its first T20I in 2005 and has played 94 matches since then. They have won 55 matches and lost 38 of them. South Africa hosted the very first ICC World T20 in 2007 and is a constant threat in every competition they take part in. Recently they whitewashed India 3-0 in India in the T20 format.
Their highest score of 241/6 came against England in Centurion, while their lowest score of 100 came against Pakistan in Centurion in 2013. Faf du Plessis holds the record for the highest individual score for South Africa, scoring 119* against West Indies in a losing cause. While Ryan McLaren holds the record for best bowling with 5/19 coming against West Indies in 2010.

Sri Lanka plays a lot of T20Is and it reflects in their results as well. They have played 90 T20Is till date and have won 48 of them and lost 40, the rest of them been no results. They played their first T20I in 2006 and since have been the most prolific team in the format. They also won the ICC World T20 in 2014 in Bangladesh, defeating India in the finals.
The highest team score for Sri Lanka is 260/6 against Kenya in the ICC World T20 2007 and their lowest score is 87 against Australia in 2010. The highest individual score for them is 104* by Tillakaratne Dilshan and best bowling figures are 6/8 by Ajantha Mendis.
Sri Lanka incidentally holds the record for highest team totals in all the three international cricket formats. They scored 952/6 in a Test innings against India in 1997, 443/9 in an ODI innings against the Netherlands in 2006 and 260/6 in a T20I innings against Kenya in 2007.

Zimbabwe has played a total of 54 T20 internationals and has won just 13 matches. They have lost 40 matches with one match being tied. They made their T20 debut in 2006 and since then have been struggling in general to play cricket due to poor administration and political environment in Zimbabwe.
Their highest score is of 200/2 against New Zealand in Hamilton in 2012 and the lowest score of 84 came against New Zealand in 2010. The highest individual score for Zimbabwe is 93* by Hamilton Masakadza and the best bowling figures are 4/37 by Tinashe Panyangara.
The best moment for Zimbabwe in T20Is came when they upset the mighty Australians in the inaugural ICC World T20 in 2007. Zimbabwe restricted Australia to 138 and then reached the target with 1 ball remaining, Brendan Taylor top scoring with 60* and causing a great shock win in the inaugural World Cup of T20 format.
