But getting more than 20 takes special talent and getting 25 centuries requires not only talent but consistency and streaks of run scoring. Here are the 5 brilliant batsmen who reached the milestone of 25 ODI hundreds the in the least number of innings. 5. Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka) – 379 innings: Kumar Sangakkara. (© Getty Images) Former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara, who retired from international cricket recently sits at the no. 5 position in our list of batsmen fastest to 25 ODI hundreds. He reached the milestone in 379 innings. The last four centuries made by Sangakkara came in the ICC World Cup 2015, where he made the unique world record of scoring 4 centuries in 4 consecutive matches. He made 105* against Bangladesh, 117* against England, 104 against Australia and 124 against Scotland in his last World Cup. Sanga retired from ODI cricket with 25 centuries and 14,234 runs to his name from 404 matches at the end of Sri Lanka’s journey in the World Cup 2015. 4. Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka) – 373 innings: Sanath Jayasuriya. (Photo by RAVEENDRAN/AFP/Getty Images) Another Sri Lankan Sanath Jayasuriya scored his 25th ODI century in the 373rd inning against West Indies in the ICC World Cup 2007. He made 115 and helped Sri Lanka reach 303, then came back to take 3 wickets for 38 runs to win the match for Sri Lanka. The former Sri Lankan captain is regarded as one of the most dangerous ODI openers ever. He changed the way the game is played in the opening 15 overs when he went after the bowling in the 1996 World Cup and played an important role in Sri Lanka becoming world champions. Sanath Jayasuriya retired in 2011 with 13,430 runs to his name in 445 matches and a total of 28 ODI centuries to his name. 3. Ricky Ponting (Australia) – 279 innings: Ricky Ponting. (© Getty Images) Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting scored his 25th ODI century in the 279th inning. His 25th century came against New Zealand in 2007 and was an unbeaten 134*. Ponting is widely regarded as one of the batting greats of the modern era and probably the best captain Australia ever had. He took over from Steve Waugh in 2001-02 and in the next decade, took Australia to the peak of ODI success, winning 2 ODI World Cups in the process and breaking many records like becoming the first team ever in ODIs to make 400 runs in an innings. Ponting retired in 2012 after playing 375 matches and making a total of 30 ODI hundreds, the last of which came in the Australia’s quarterfinal loss at the hands of India in the World Cup 2011. 2. Sachin Tendulkar (India) – 234 innings: Sachin Tendulkar. (© Getty Images) The master blaster Sachin Tendulkar is at the number 2 position, reaching the 25th ODI hundred in his 234th inning. Sachin played 463 matches for 18,426 runs and a mind-blowing 49 centuries in ODI before hanging his gloves in 2012. His 25th hundred came in 2000, in a match against South Africa in Vadodara. South Africa made 282 with Kallis top scoring with 81. India reached the target with 1 ball remaining, despite Sourav Ganguly’s 87 and Sachin’s 122 runs. Sachin rewrote the ODI books with his records, most of which will take immense talent and consistency to be overhauled. 1. Virat Kohli (India) – 162 innings: Virat Kohli. Kohli scored a brilliant century in the recently concluded 4th ODI against Australia while chasing 349 to win. Despite his heroics, India lost the match by 25 runs. Kohli has been on a record-breaking spree in the ongoing ODI series, becoming the fastest to 24 tons and 7000 ODI runs. He already has proved to be a modern great with his batting, especially in chasing totals. Only future will tell how many more records this brilliant Indian batsman and future ODI captain creates and re-creates.
