The legendary Indian batsman, VVS Laxman, had made the tournament his own in 1998-00 by amassing a mammoth 1415 runs in just 9 matches. After being dropped from the national side in 1999, Laxman made a strong statement by singlehandedly taking Hyderabad to the finals of the Ranji Trophy. With 8 hundreds to his name in the season at an average of 108.84, Laxman certainly was a nightmare for the bowlers. He scored a gritty 111 in the finals against Mumbai, but that wasn’t enough for his side to lift the silverware. His best performance came against Karnataka at the Chinnaswamy Stadium when he scored a marathon triple century, 353 studded with 52 boundaries and 2 sixes. No wonder, he was recalled in the national side after his efforts!
