In 2008, Mark Benson was nominated in the ICC Umpire of the year category for the second consecutive year and was at the pinnacle of the career. But, then his career took an astounding U-turn much to the surprise of many. In the second test match of Border-Gavaskar trophy at Sydney in 2008, Benson accompanied Steve Bucknor in the match, which is epitomized as the most disgraceful test match as far as umpiring is concerned.

Mark Benson was involved in as many as 7 controversial decisions in the match which turned out to be wrong. The memories of the English umpire asking the Australian captain Ricky Ponting than the third umpire whether Sourav Ganguly’s catch in the slip was clean or not is still fresh in the minds of millions. In 2009, it was reported that Benson was not happy with the Decision Review System (DRS) as it challenged umpires decisions, and subsequently he took retirement from umpiring in International cricket.
