Top 5 Slowest fifties in Tests: Test cricket brings out the best from every batsman. Everyone knows it is a tough challenge to sustain as a batsman at the Test level. Test cricket sometimes throws some unpredictable and arduous challenges at the batsmen. Not every batsman is able to withstand such challenges, only a handful do. Patience, nerves, determination, and skills are some of the vital attributes which are required to overcome such challenges and some batsmen have them these attributes abundance with them. Defending the ball is considered tough and defending every ball which comes to you is not only difficult but also back-breaking activity. Peter Taylor (Australia) – 235 Balls: Peter May played for Australia for a brief period of time. Peter May won his teammates respect after he played a crucial innings of 54* in 251 balls. He batted at number seven in that match and his half-century came in 235 balls. However, his efforts could not have any effect on the match as Australian lost by an innings and 188 runs. (© Bob Thomas/Getty Images) Chris Tavare’ was the most preferred number batsman for England during the 1980’s. He had a tendency to bat recklessly against spinners and always tried to dominate them. However, Tavare’ showed maturity when his team need the most. England were made to follow on Pakistan. Tavare’ opened the innings and top scored for his team with a sturdy knock of 82 runs off 277 balls. It took him 236 balls to reach his fifty. He valiantly countered the fast bowling duo of Imran Khan and Sarfraz Nawaz who had brought them to their knees in the first innings. 3. Evan Gray (New Zealand) – 238 Balls: Evan Gray was a specialist bowler who played only 10 Tests for New Zealand. He was also a decent lower order batsman. He has only one half-century to his name and that is epic in its own sense. It took Evan Gray 238 balls to reach his half-century playing against England at Nottingham in 1986. He batted at a strike rate of just 21 in that match after coming in to bat at number 6. 2. Allan Border (Australia) – 262 Balls: Allan Border. Border battled against the likes of Malcolm Marshall, Curtly Ambrose, and Courtney Walsh to score 75 runs off 330 balls. He reached his fifty in 262 balls and played at a strike rate of just around 22. Australia won by 7 wickets and he was later adjudged as the Man of the Match. 1. Trevor Bailey (England) – 350 Balls: Trevod Bailey. In all, Bailey made 68 runs which used up 425 balls. It took him 350 balls to reach his fifty, it was a brave effort in a match where only two batsmen reached fifty. The other batsman, Norm O’Neill, went past Bailey with an unbeaten 71 as the Aussies eased home. Incidentally, it was the Australia’s first televised Test.
