4. Navjot Singh Sidhu vs. Australia Chennai, 1987 – 73 off 79 balls

Navjot Singh Sidhu had made his test debut In 1983 against the West Indies, but he was discarded after being labelled as a stroke less wonder for his dour batting style. Sidhu went back to domestic cricket and practised hitting sixes each day.

He was chosen for the 1987 World cup and made his ODI debut against Australia in a very exciting match. Australia made 270 with the help of Geoff Marsh’s 110. India began their chase in style with Sunil Gavaskar and Kris Srikkanth going after the Australian bowlers. Sidhu came into bat at the fall of Gavaskar’s wicket and blasted 73 runs including 5 huge sixes. Despite his effort, India lost by just 1 run.

Sidhu became the first player to hit 4 consecutive 50s in a World cup and earned the moniker of Sixer Sidhu.
