Trans Tasman Tri-Series, NZ vs AUS, 5th T20I – Statistical Highlights

Auckland’s Eden Park witnessed one of the greatest ever T20I matches of the history where the Australian chased down a record 244-run target with ease. The home team’s happiness of posting their joint highest T20I total of 243/6 didn’t last long as the in-form Aussies needed only 18.5 overs to chase down the total. Martin Guptill’s 2nd T20I century went in vain during this high scoring encounter. New Zealand’s qualification for the final of this T20I tri-series will now depend upon the result of their final game against England.

All the stats and numbers that were created during the record-breaking runfeast:

1 – This game between New Zealand and Australia is the first in T20I history where both the teams put on a century stand for their opening wicket. New Zealand openers put on a 132-run stand while the Australians shared 121 for the opening wicket.

4 – Number of bowlers conceded over 50 runs in this game. This is the first ever T20I game where four bowlers conceded over 50 runs. Three bowlers conceded 50+ on three different occasions previously.

20.21 – Ben Wheeler’s economy rate of 20.21 is the worst for any bowler in a T20I. (Min: 3 overs) He conceded 64 runs in the 3.1 overs before removed from the attack as he bowled multiple beamers. Afghanistan’s Izatullah Dawlatzai conceded 56 runs in three overs against England in 2012 WT20 game at an economy of 18.66.

32 – The 32 sixes in this match are the joint most in a T20I game. Australia hit 14 sixes in this game while New Zealand hit 18 sixes which are the most for them in a T20I inning. The 2016 T20I game in Lauderhill between Windies and India also witnessed 32 sixes.

64 – Runs conceded by Andrew Tye and Ben Wheeler in this game. Both are the most by a bowler in a T20I for Australia and New Zealand respectively. Brett Lee’s 56 runs against Windies in 2009 WT20 were the previous most in a T20I for Australia.

Colin de Grandhomme’s 56 runs in this game are the 2nd most runs conceded by a New Zealand player in a T20I. Tim Southee’s 53 runs in the 2010 T20I against Pakistan were the previous most runs conceded by a Kiwi player in a T20I match.

98 – Number of sixes for Martin Guptill in this format. These are the 2nd most for any player behind Chris Gayle’s 103 sixes. The Kiwi opener now holds the record for most sixes by a New Zealand player in T20Is surpassing Brendon McCullum’s 91 sixes.

244 – Australia successful run-chase of 244 is the highest by any team in T20Is and also in the Twenty20 format. Windies chased down 232 against South Africa in the 2015 Johannesburg T20I which was the previous highest successful chase in the T20Is and Twenty20s.

316 – The 316 runs aggregated by openers of both the teams in this game are the most in a T20I match surpassing the 279 runs by the openers in the Indore T20I between India and Sri Lanka last year. This is also the first time that all the four opening batsmen hit fifties in a T20I game.

488 – The aggregate of 488 runs in this game is the 2nd most in a T20I and the 3rd highest in all Twenty20 matches. The Central Districts and Otago game in 2016 witnessed 497 runs scored while the Windies-India T20I in Lauderhill in the same year aggregated 489 runs.

2188 – Martin Guptill became the leading run-getter in the T20I cricket by going past Brendon McCullum’s 2140 runs. Guptill went past his former opening partner’s tally when he reached 59.
