Twitter is astounded after Hanuma Vihari notches a fifty in his maiden Test knock

Prior to their final two Test matches against England, India made a few changes. Prithvi Shaw and Hanuma Vihari were in stupendous form in first-class cricket and were rightfully drafted in the national squad. The alterations were mostly attributed to the poor performance dished out by the Indian batsmen in the first three Tests at Edgbaston, Lord’s and Trent Bridge.

While Shaw didn’t get an opportunity, Vihari was roped in the eleven for the final Test at Kennington Oval in London. He came to bat after James Anderson nipped out Ajinkya Rahane. Moreover, India had a trail of over 200 runs, which would’ve added to the pressure. When he was on duck, he survived a massive scare when he was adjudged Leg Before Wicket (LBW).

Vihari impresses everyone

However, the Decision Review System (DRS) showed that he wasn’t out. Thereafter he put his head down to play out the remaining overs of the second day. A flurry of wickets went down, but it didn’t ruffle his feathers by any stretch of the imagination. In the morning of the third day, he along with Ravindra Jadeja buckled down to counter the English attack, which didn’t make things easy.

The partnership eventually went on to add 77 runs and most importantly, brought India’s trail down to 95 runs. The right-handed batsman eventually notched his maiden half-century in international cricket and looked good to convert. Unfortunately, he was nipped out by off-break bowler Moeen Ali for 56 runs in 124 balls just at the stroke of the lunch.

The bowler dished out a delivery outside the off-stump and the leather took Vihari’s outside edge into the hands of Jonny Bairstow. The umpire declared him out, but this time around the DRS couldn’t come to his rescue. In the meantime, Twitter hailed Vihari for the determined approach he had shown on his maiden appearance in Indian colours.
