England No. 3 Joe Root made up for his jaded performances in the first test at Lord’s in perhaps the best way possible, hitting a double century in the following Test. The Yorkshireman continued his rampage on the Pakistan bowlers and has put England in a solid position in the game on day two of the Old Trafford game.

Root resumed at 141 in the morning and batted with total command to reach 150 for the 5th time in his career within few overs into the new day. He batted without facing much problems throughout the day and reached the milestone late in the afternoon with a boundary off Yasir Shah’s last ball in the 129th over. This is the second double century of his career, surpassing the 200* which he scored against Australia.

England are currently sitting pretty comfortable at 471/5 at the time when Root removed his helmet to acknowledge his brilliant double century. The hosts resumed at 314/4 this morning and lost only Chris Woakes in today’s play. Woakes and Root combined together to put up a solid 97 runs stand for the 5th wicket before the all-rounder departed in the 114th over, adding another half-century to his credit. He made 58 off 104 deliveries.

But, Woakes’ wicket did not shift the momentum at all as Root then found support in Ben Stokes. Both of them added another 57 runs for the 6th wicket together as Pakistan bowlers continued to bend their back without any huge success.
