The India Under-19 team defeated the Australian Under-19 team by a margin of 100 runs in the first match of their U19 World Cup 2018; the Australian side succumbed to pressure on the big day. It was a clinical victory for India and a wonderful exhibition of top-quality allround cricket. They started off the tournament on a winning note. Such a comprehensive victory against a top-side will be a huge boost to their campaign.
Team India U19 coach, Rahul Dravid’s move to take the team to New Zealand ahead of the schedule seems the have worked wonders. The team has acclimatized to the swing and conditions. That could clearly be observed in today’s game. The batsmen played according to the situation either being aggressive or defensive as required. The bowlers too, hit the right areas bowling Australia out in just 42.5 overs.
Briefing of the match
The Indian openers Prithvi Shaw and Manjot Kalra set the match up beautifully for India. Shaw top-scored for India. He made 94 runs off 100 deliveries. The 180-run stand at a run-rate of over 6 laid the platform for India to score big. Players in the middle-order and lower-order played some brilliant cameos to take the total past 300. India thus scored 328 for the loss of 7 wickets in their 50 overs quota.
Chasing such a huge total down, Australia didn’t seem to be comfortable at any stage of the game. Their top 4 players have done decently well but were slow. As the required run-rate was getting higher, the Aussies kept losing wickets at regular intervals.
The bowlers were highly disciplined and bowled the right lines and lengths. Shivam Mavi and Kamlesh Nagarkoti picked three wickets each dismantling the Australian batting order. The remaining two wickets were picked by Abhishek Sharma and Anukul Sudhakar Roy.
Twitterati was over-joyed with the performance of the team and were all praises for the team. Here are some of the best reactions:
