Twitter Reactions: Ashwin, Vijay shine as India take the upper hand
After an impressive opening day for the visitors, it was the turn of India to call the shots on the 2nd day of the 4th Test in Mumbai as they finished Day 2 in a strong position. Beginning the day at 288/5, England lost Ben Stokes early to Ravichandran Ashwin. Though he was originally given not out, the umpire had to change his decision following the call from the 3rd umpire despite the decision being a debatable one.
Courtesy Stokes’ wicket, Ashwin bagged his 23rd five-wicket-haul in Test cricket and continued his dream run in the longest format of the game. Woakes and Adil Rashid fell in quick succession to Jadeja before Jake Ball joined Jos Buttler to frustrate the Indians. The duo stitched together a 54 run partnership for the 9th wicket to take England to the elusive 400 mark. Ashwin and Jadeja were the wicket takers for India with 6 and 4 wickets respectively.
India began their 1st innings on a positive note with comeback man Lokesh Rahul looking in a nice rhythm. He hit some beautiful strokes during his attractive yet small innings of 24 before getting castled by Moeen Ali. Cheteshwar Pujara joined Murali Vijay in the middle and never allowed the England bowlers to dominate them. They never looked in any sort of trouble what so ever and finished the day’s play without a loss of any further wickets.
Vijay who was troubled by the short delivery during the first three Tests rectified his mistake and applied himself to perfection. He left all the deliveries and struck the big shots whenever required. By the end of the day’s play, the stylish right-hander remained unbeaten on 70 with six fours and two sixes to his name.
Cheteshwar Pujara who had already scored two centuries in the series so far continued his domination in the Indian pitches and remained unbeaten on 47 at the end of the day’s play. The pair shared an unbeaten 107 run partnership for the 2nd wicket as India finished Day 2 at 146/1, 254 runs adrift of England’s 1st innings total.
