Nathan Lyon was the last wicket to fall when he was picked up by the uncanny Vernon Philander. This saw Australia complete their innings and a take a one-run lead, something that was highly unexpected. Moreover, the fact that they were bowled out for a mere 244 following the star they had was something that not many certainly expected from them.

The day began with David Warner and Shaun Marsh expecting to continue where they had left off on the previous day. This began with Warner continuing his onslaught and Marsh playing second fiddle. Following Warner’s dismissal, the Australians crumbled like a pack of cards. They lost their last 84 runs to all 10 wickets, something that meant that the South Africans were well and truly back in the grand scheme of things.

Among this, there was the controversial dismissal of the Australia skipper Steve Smith who was not able to make his innings count. He was out for a duck to Keshav Maharaj where he advanced down the wicket and was adjudged leg-before by Aleem Dar. In spite of going upstairs, subsequent reviews and evidence pointed to the fact that the Aussie skipper was dismissed for the same thing.

Dale Steyn had to leave the field for play for an inadvertent shoulder injury. The 33-year old pacer had been ruled out of the previous cricketing season with the injury and once again faced a similar plight as he was rushed off to the hospital for a quick inspection. However, in spite of all this, it seems clear that a mouthwatering encounter is on the cards and a result is almost guaranteed.
