History has been witnessed in Lahore as Pakistan have recorded their highest successful run-chase in ODI history. A second-stringed Australian bowling line-up couldn’t defend a mammoth 348 in the second ODI as the Men in Green clinched the contest by six wickets. Babar Azam stole the show in the game with a breathtaking ton. Meanwhile, the three-match series now stands 1-1 with the deciding clash taking place on Saturday (April 2).
Earlier in the game, Pakistan won the toss opted to bowl at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Left-arm pacer Shaheen Afridi justified the decision straight away, dismissing Australian captain and opener Aaron Finch for a golden duck. However, the centurion from the last game, Travis Head, joined forces with Ben McDermott and the duo steadied the ship. While Head was aggressive in his approach, McDermott was watchful in the middle.
Just when Head looked on the right track to slam his second consecutive ton, Zahid Mahmood dismissed him for 89, which came off just 70 deliveries. McDermott, however, advanced to his maiden ODI century. He eventually fell prey to Mohammad Wasim Jr but not before scoring 104 off 108 deliveries. Marnus Labuschagne, Marcus Stoinis, and Sean Abbott also played handy cameos as Australia posted a daunting 348/8 in their allotted 50 overs.
Sensational show from Pakistan’s top-order
Chasing the massive total, the Men in Green got off to a perfect start with Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq adding 118 runs for the first wicket. Both batters were watchful against the challenging deliveries but were also finding boundaries regularly. Zaman’s dismissal at a personal score of 67 brought skipper Babar Azam to the middle. The talismanic batter joined forces with Imam and the duo gave Aussie bowlers a hard time.
Both batters brought up their respective centuries as the hosts looked on command with the scorecard reading 229/1. Azam was brilliant in particular, as he slammed runs for fun and ended up scoring 114 off just 83 deliveries. On the other hand, Imam made 106 off just 97 balls. The baton was then passed onto Mohammad Rizwan and Khushdil Shah, who ensured Pakistan crossed the line with six balls to spare.
Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitter reacted to the game’s proceedings:
