He isn’t recognized as an all-rounder yet but Rashid Khan has shown glimpses of his true potential with the bat. He backs himself to do well in all the trades. Rashid is among the best spinners in the business today, agile on the field and can definitely use the long handle late down the order. Afghanistan didn’t have the best of the starts in the match against Bangladesh and were really struggling until Rashid and Gulbadin Naib flourished in the last few overs.
Asghar Afghan won the toss today and decided to bat first, Bangladesh considering the game against India tomorrow rested three players. Things worked out pretty smooth for them early on in the innings as the Afghan batsmen struggled to get going on a slow and sluggish surface at Abu Dhabi. The likes of Mohammad Shahzad, Ihsanullah, Rahmat Shah all struggled to time the ball.
Despite a fifty from No.4 Hashmatullah Shahidi, Afghanistan had just 160 runs on the board after 41 overs. They were 7 down then and the chips were absolutely down. But Rashid and Naib thereafter changed the complexion of not just their innings but to a large extent that of the game as well. They played some magnificent shots all around the park. The shot selection was spot on and also made great use of the large outfield.
They ran hard, were cheeky, outsmarted the bowlers more often than not to penetrate the field and played over the top in the area the fielders were inside the circle. The aerial shots were also cautious and in areas where it could fall in no man’s land.
Rashid took the attack on opposition bowlers in the last 10 overs as Afghanistan got 90 runs at double-quick pace to end up on 255. At one point 200 looked beyond their reach but Rashid’s unbeaten 57 off 32 balls that included 8 fours and a six and Naib’s 38-ball 42 helped them get a total the team will be confident walking out there and defending.
Here is how Twitterati reacted to their effort:
