Guyana Amazon Warriors recovered from their hefty defeat over the Saint Lucia Kings and beat the Barbados Royals by nine wickets in their previous game. The victory, meanwhile, lifted them to third in the points table in the ongoing CPL. The Royals, on the other hand, stayed at the bottom.

Imran Tahir stars for the Warriors

After batting first, the Royals huffed and puffed to 130. Opener Johnson Charles and Shai Hope got into their 20s, but couldn’t convert. Imran Tahir got of Smit Patel and Glenn Phillips to inflict more misery on the Royals. Raymon Reifer and Azam Khan scored in their 20s and then got out.

The lower-order couldn’t contribute much as the team was bowled out. For the Warriors, Tahir was the most successful as he picked up three wickets. Romario Shepherd was again amongst the wickets as he dismissed Khan and Holder. Odean Smith also chipped in with a timely spell.

Hemraj smashes the Royals

The Warriors didn’t give the Royals the slightest of chance to make a comeback as they chased the target down with 34 balls left. Brandon King was back to opening the batting and he looked good for his 17-ball 19. However, Nyeem Young trapped him in front and cut short his stay in the middle.

But he was involved in a crucial partnership of 103 with Chandrapaul Hemraj off a mere 62 balls. Hemraj smacked the Royals’ bowling as he scored an unbeaten 56-ball knock of 105, laced with 14 fours and five sixes. It was a complete one-man show for the Warriors in the run-chase.

We need to put more runs on the board: Jason Holder

After the Warriors got over the line, Nicholas Pooran, their skipper, was overjoyed. He also talked about his tactic of using Tahir that paid off. Jason Holder, on the contrary, was clear cut in saying that his team needs to put runs on the board for the bowlers to work with.

“Very pleased. I had a lot of headaches with the batting positions and we just told our guys to win games for us. Pleased with how we batted. We felt like after watching the first game that the pacers were expensive. We just continued with Imran Tahir for his second over and it worked for us. Very happy with the way the guys came out and executed our plans,” Pooran said after the match.

“The first game was a high scoring game. We never got any momentum. In all the games we have struggled with the bat. Trying to defend 120-130 is a tough task and we need to find a way to put runs on the board. The surface is uneven, some of the balls grip. Ashley bowled well for us. We need to find a way to put more runs on the board and play a complete game,” Holder said.
