The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are well and truly back on track in the second leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season. They started with a couple of losses but have now won two consecutive matches, the latest one coming against the Rajasthan Royals who have yet again almost botched up their chances of making it to the playoffs with some poor cricket. This match was also the same story as they let the game go away with some poor batting.

Earlier, the Royals started off really well. Their opening duo of Evin Lewis and Yashasvi Jaiswal took full advantage of the flat pitch, probably the best of the second leg of IPL 2021, to rake runs at will. While Lewis was absolutely disdainful in his approach, Jasiwal showed his class showcasing immense improvement from his poor 2020 season.

Each of the RCB bowlers had to face the wrath of them in the powerplay as RR reached 56/0 in the first six overs. The fun continued for both batters, however, Daniel Christian cut short Jaiswal’s enterprising stay. The youngster, nevertheless, smashed 31 off just 22 balls with three fours and a couple of sixes. At the other end, Lewis continued his carnage hitting some of the biggest hits.

He also got to his first IPL half-century since 2018 and should’ve probably got a big one on the day. He was in the zone only to mishit one off debutant George Garton. RR were 100/2 after Lewis got out in 11.1 overs and this is when things began to change. Sanju Samson soon followed Lewis and RR went down from sitting comfortable at 100/1 to 127/6.

Virat Kohli made some interesting bowling changes during this period and both Yuzvendra Chahal and Shahbaz Ahmed struck for their skipper. The Royals never got the finishing kick to their innings and could end only at 149/9 in their 20 overs. RCB pulled things back superbly in the second half of the innings with Harshal Patel also scalping three wickets in his spell.

RCB canter home comfortably

The 150-run chase was never going to trouble RCB. Their openers Devdutt Padikkal and Virat Kohli got the team off to a brilliant start. They added 48 runs together for the opening wicket but both of them couldn’t continue in the same vein to get out on 22 and 25 respectively. Kohli had himself to blame as he attempted to steal a single off a mis-field and Riyan Parag affected a sensational direct hit.

At 58/2 in the seventh over, the Royals must have sensed an opportunity to put pressure on RCB. But the pitch was so flat and they had just simply missed out on a chance to bat well earlier in the game. The duo of KS Bharat and Glenn Maxwell kept rotating the strike in the middle while also churned out boundaries at regular intervals.

RCB seem to have to finally found their number three in Bharat as he scored a calculated 44. Maxwell, at the other end, took a measured approach until Bharat was in the middle and once he got out, just unleashed on the opposition. From being 26 off 21 balls, he reached his half-century off the next nine deliveries to finish the game in the 18th over itself. RCB won the game comfortably by seven wickets to register 7th win of the season.
