Australia women’s skipper Meg Lanning announced her retirement from international cricket. In a decision that has been branded as shocking by many, Lanning announced that she has decided to hang her boots after an incredibly successful career that has spanned over 13 years.
Leading Australia women in 182 international matches, Lanning opined that it was the right time for her to step away. Just 31 years old, Lanning has been one of the most successful captains for Australia women in history, having led the side to four T20I World Cup titles, one ODI World Cup title, and the Commonwealth Gold in 2022.
Her record as the skipper speaks volumes of her. With 69 wins out of 78 ODIs, 76 wins in 100 T20Is, and a Test victory as well in the four Tests that she captained Australia, Lanning’s retirement from international cricket will surely leave a big hole in the side to fill.
Lanning played 241 international games across formats, where she amassed 8352 runs with 15 centuries and two half-centuries. After announcing her retirement from international cricket, Lanning came forward to talk about her career. Lanning stated that it felt like the right time for her to move onto something new.
"The decision to step away from international cricket was a difficult one to make, but I feel now is the right time for me. I've been incredibly fortunate to enjoy a 13-year international career, but I know now is the right time for me to move on to something new. Team success is why you play the game, I'm proud of what I have been able to achieve and will cherish the moments shared with teammates along the way," Lanning was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
Celebrating her legendary career, many former and current stars from the cricket world took to Twitter to congratulate Lanning on a fantastic career.
Here's how twitter reacted to Lanning's announcement:
