ENG vs WI, First Test, Day 2 Review
West Indies trail by 171 runs at the end of day 2.
Day 2 of the first Test between England and the West Indies picked up right where it was left off. The proceedings continued at the Lord’s Cricket Ground after a relatively tough day for the West Indies. England, who managed to score 189 runs with the loss of three wickets, had taken a lead of 68 runs when Day 1 ended.
Joe Root and Harry Brook stood at the crease on scores of 15 and 25 runs, respectively, as Day 2 of the clash began. Both batters put in brilliant showings as Root managed to score 68 runs in 114 deliveries, with Harry Brook posting 50 runs in 64 deliveries. Skipper Ben Stokes failed to make an impact in the first innings as he was dismissed for just four runs in 11 deliveries.
However, Jamie Smith played a marvellous innings, scoring 70 runs in 119 deliveries, with Chris Woakes adding 23 runs on the board as England posted a total of 371 runs in the first innings.
As for the West Indies, Jayden Seales was the highest wicket-taker for his side, with four wickets to his name. Jason Holder and Gudakesh Motie took two wickets each, alongside Alzarri Joseph, who struck once as well.
West Indies crumble once more in second innings
Aiming to minimise their trail, the West Indies came out to bat. However, they once again fell to the relentless pressure of England’s bowling attack. Openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Mikyle Louis once again failed to go big as they scored four and 14 runs, respectively. Kirk McKenzie departed for a duck in nine deliveries. Alick Athanaze
Alick Athanaze scored 22 runs in 47 balls, with Kavem Hodge adding just four runs on the board. Jason Holder added 20 runs on the board, with Joshua Da Silva staying unbeaten by a score of eight runs as the day ended.
As for England, James Anderson, Gus Atkinson, and Ben Stokes were the wicket takers, with two wickets each to their names. The West Indies scored 79 runs with the loss of six wickets as the day ended and trailed by 171 runs.
