Suryakumar Yadav is currently the most talked about cricketer in the fraternity, ever since he notched up a century against Sri Lanka in the third and final T20I on Saturday, January 7. In front of a packed stadium in Rajkot, Suryakumar put up a masterclass and scored an unbeaten 112* off 51 deliveries to help India post a whopping total of 228/5.
In response, the guests failed to even get closer to the target and were bowled out for 137, giving the hosts a 91-run victory in the series decider. While everyone praised Suryakumar, former India cricketer and World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir had a unique wish for him. Gambhir opined that it was time for Suryakumar to get a chance in Test cricket.
The 32-year-old batter had been at his best throughout 2022 and continued his good form in 2023 as well by notching up his 13th T20I half-century, and his third T20I century during the Sri Lanka series. He hasn’t received his Test call-up yet, even though his First-Class numbers speak a lot for him. But the Indian cricket fans were disappointed with Gambhir’s statement.
There were a few who said that Suryakumar should continue playing in the white-ball format, given his ability to score quick-fire runs. While there were also some who said that Suryakumar’s style of play in the T20Is cannot be the base of his selection in the Test format. There was also a user who said that the batter needs to prove himself under pressure situations in white-ball games.
Fans want to see Sarfaraz Khan in India's Test squad
There were many who argued that players like Sarfaraz Khan, Rajat Patidar, Baba Indrajith, who have stunned everyone with their performances in First Class cricket, should get a chance to play Test cricket ahead of Suryakumar. They said that players like Sarfaraz have been consistent in First-Class and still haven't received a Test call-up, which is something to be focused upon right now.
Though Suryakumar has emerged as a force in the T20Is, his performances in the ODI format have not reached the required level. His average and strike rate in the ODIs is low as compared to his T20I numbers. Thus, there were also some users who said that he needs to improve in the ODIs as well and become a proper white-ball player before becoming an all-format player.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to Gautam Gambhir’s statement:
If someone is doing good in one formet doesn't mean he would excel in other formet as well. When someone do good in one formet we start saying that he should given chance in other formet as well that's why we don't have good team in all formet

Hold on I'm not agree with you. If he will play in Test then he will have to play very slow, and that's why he will loose his consistency playing hard & Fast in T20 & ODI. There are more players who can play test much better & they don't have fear to loose form in other format.

No need to put in test cricket.. test cricket is game of patience.. let him do good in white ball.. test cricket need some young player like subhman. He is already 32 and have 3-4 years of cricket.. let him enjoy white ball as long as he can. We want to see him fit and dominating

India plays so much cricket, the time for all format players has gone, need specialists now. Moreover, should Sarfaraz, Patidar, Indrajith, etc. hang up their boots seeing as their stellar performance can be ignored for a player in red hot T20 form?

Surya is great player but still he need to prove his game under pressure bcz all the good knocks we have seen are first batting or no pressure game.

Only virat is capable to score at any situation.
And what about ones who are scoring in Ranji trophy continuosly? I think T20 and Test should be kept seperately. Surya needs Domestic Test matches performances to get him in test team. You can't play these shots in Test matches. He is the best T20 batter without a doubt.

Cant play ODI properly and u want to play him Tests dont mix the formats if a player is good at particular format then even Pujara deserves in T20Is
— BABAR X VIRAT (@imshubhh016) January 7, 2023
Clearly mixing formats. Before he comes in Sarfaraz Khan has to make it to the team. Else, there would be no value to Ranji performances.

I disagree.

Mayank Agarwal’s T20 game is ruined as he was introduced to Test.
Some players are built for T20, let’s not ruin that.
That’s the whole problem with Indian cricket, mixing formats. His FC average is 45 not 65. It is Sarfaraz who deserves that chance not him. One would have thought that someone who opened for India would know this but alas.

It is better sky focus on the t20s and not confuse him by making him play test cricket. There are a lot of players with good records in tests, and let them focus in there. The future is to identify players for different formats, manage workload and be more focussed in that arena.

Expert throwing impulsive opinions is the worst. We have an entire system in place for selecting Test Cricketers. Even if Surya is awesome, he’s not a great First Class cricketer. There are people toiling away in Ranjhi. Bring them to light once in a while !

Expected better from you Gauti. Why does he make the team team? What about those who have been scoring runs in Ranji cricket. Sarfaraz for example? Not setting the right example if you pick someone based on white ball form for a completely different game
