Day 2 of the second Test of the ongoing series between India and England saw the hosts maintain their dominance in the game. Led by Rohit Sharma, the Indian team finished Day 1 of the game on 336/6 in the first innings.

Ravichandran Ashwin and youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal took the team to stumps on Day 1 as the second day rolled around. Jaiswal capitalised on his knock from the first day, completing his double century. The star batter scored 209 runs in 290 deliveries and helped India post a total of 396 runs in the first innings. 

As for England, Shoaib Bashir, Rehan Ahmed, and James Anderson were the highest wicket-takers for the side, with three wickets each to their names. Tom Hartley took the remaining one wicket.

Coming into the first innings trailing by 396 runs, England got off to a good start with the bat as Zak Crawley scored 76 runs in 78 deliveries. However, after the opener’s brilliance, none of the other batters managed to amount to much.

Ben Duckett scored 21 runs, and Ollie Pope added 23 runs on the board. Star batter Joe Root was sent packing for just five runs, with Jonny Bairstow scoring 25. Skipper Ben Stokes showed a glimmer of hope, scoring 47 runs in 54 deliveries, but was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah with a peach of a delivery.

Furthermore, England’s lower order was at the mercy of the Indian bowling attack, as the visitors only managed to post 253 runs in the first innings of the second Test. As for India, Jasprit Bumrah was the highest wicket-taker, with six wickets to his name. Kuldeep Yadav took three wickets, with Axar Patel striking once.

Coming into bat with a good amount of lead, the Indian team ended Day 2 of the second Test with openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma at the crease, unbeaten at scores of 15 and 13 runs, respectively. With a lead of 171 runs, India will strive to maximise on Day 3 and post a big target for England to chase.
