IND vs SL: Ishan Kishan ODI snub compared with Karun Nair fate by Indian cricket fans on Twitter
India skipper Rohit Sharma had made it clear that he would be opening the innings along with Shubman Gill during the pre-match presser.
After a morale-boosting win in the T20I series, Team India will be hoping to showcase a splendid performance in the first One Day International at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on Tuesday. However, the decision to snub in-form Ishan Kishan to allow Shubman Gill continue as an opener in the One-Day Internationals (ODIs), didn't go down well amongst fans.
India skipper Rohit Sharma had confirmed about the decision during the pre-match press conference and said that he would be opening the innings along with Shubman Gill in the first game.
This was indeed a surprise move as Kishan had registered the fastest-ever ODI double century last month against Bangladesh where he had scored 210 off just 131 deliveries.
There were some gutted netizens who even compared Ishan Kishan’s snub with that of Karun Nair who was slowly out of the reckoning just a few months after he had scored a triple century against England in the fifth and final Test match at Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium in December 2016.
While he became only the second Indian batter to register a triple ton in Test cricket after Virender Sehwag, Karun’s career never took off from there on and he has not been in the national selection committee’s scheme of things since March 2017.
Here are some of the reactions:
Mohammad Kaif disappointed with Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar’s omission from first ODI
Even former India batter Mohammad Kaif was surprised with this move and he said that he is “slightly uncomfortable” with Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan not getting chances despite looking in fine form.
“Slightly uncomfortable with the prospect of watching an Indian team today without last ODI's double hundred scorer, Ishan Kishan, and last T20's centurion Suryakumar Yadav. Hope they remain motivated,” Kaif tweeted.
