'What comeback' - Netizens react as Travis Head pulps New Zealand with quickfire century in Dharamsala
Travis Head scored a blistering century against New Zealand on his ODI World Cup debut, returning from an injury.
Australia and New Zealand went against each in a crucial encounter in the ODI World Cup 2023 in Dharamsala on October 28.
Stand-in captain Tom Latham won the toss and opted to field first as he expected some assistance off the deck for the pacers with the new ball. However, the shine on the new ball was taken off in quick time thanks to the blitzkrieg from David Warner and a fit-again Travis Head.
The latter was the more aggressive in a destructive 175-run opening stand off 117 balls. Head and Warner put the Kiwi bowlers to the sword and hit at least one boundary in each of the first 13 overs. Warner was eventually dismissed for 81 off 65 balls, hitting five fours and six sixes.
Head, however, continued the onslaught and got to the magical three-figure mark in just 59 balls. His whirlwind knock eventually ended when he was beaten on the inside edge while trying to force a delivery onto the off-side off the bowling of Glenn Phillips.
However, the southpaw's 109-run innings off 67 balls, comprising 10 fours and seven towering sixes, put the Blackcaps onto the backfoot in the trans-Tasman clash. Notably, the southpaw was in action for the first time in Australia's World Cup campaign as he was restricted to the sidelines with an injured left hand, with Mitchell Marsh filling in for him alongside Warner.
Head became the fifth Aussie to score a century on World Cup debut. He also recorded the fourth-fastest hundred for Australia in ODI cricket. Incidentally, Glenn Maxwell recorded the fastest century by an Australian player in ODIs in the previous game against the Netherlands and it came off just 40 balls.
