Sunrisers Eastern Cape defeated Durban's Super Giants by 51 runs to make their way into the SA20 2024 final.
Qualifier 1 of the ongoing SA20 2024 featured a clash between Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Durban's Super Giants at the Newlands in Cape Town on Tuesday, February 6. The winner was guaranteed a spot in the summit clash of the tournament, and both sides had it all to play for.
The clash began with Eastern Cape coming in to bat first after winning the toss. The side got off to a good start to the game as openers Jordan Hermann and Dawid Malan scored 21 and 63 runs, respectively. Tom Abell was sent packing for just two runs, but skipper Aiden Markram’s knock of 30 runs in 23 deliveries stabilised the innings for the side.
Furthermore, Tristan Stubbs scored 14 runs, with Patrick Kruger adding 11 runs on the board, as Eastern Cape posted a total of 157 runs on the board in the first innings of the clash. As for Super Giants, Keshav Maharaj and Junior Dala were the highest wicket-takers, with two wickets each to their names. Naveen-ul-Haq and Dwaine Pretorius took one wicket each as well.
Jansen-Baartman show propels Eastern Cape to summit clash
Aiming to defend a target of 158 runs, Sunrisers Eastern Cape put forth a brilliant performance with the ball in the qualifier of the SA20 2024. Durban’s Super Giants opened the innings with Matthew Breetzke and Tony de Zorzi getting sent back to the pavilion for just three and two runs, respectively.
Quinton de Kock added 20 runs on the board, with Wiaan Mulder scoring 38 and Heinrich Klaasen adding 23 runs on the scoreboard. Eastern Cape’s bowling attack put forth a magnificent showing. Marco Jansen and Ottniel Baartman were the highest wicket takers with four wickets each; Liam Dawson took two wickets as Super Giants were bundled out for 106 runs; Eastern Cape won the game by 51 runs and became the first finalist of the SA20 2024.
