‘The Shafali Verma show’ - Fans go berserk as Shafali Verma propels Delhi Capitals to fabulous win against Gujarat Giants

The ninth match of the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 saw Gujarat Giants take on Delhi Capitals on Saturday, March 11, at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai.

The struggle of Gujarat Giants continued as they suffered yet another defeat. Out of the four matches that they have played, Gujarat have only won one, and that was against Royal Challengers Bangalore, who are struggling in the tournament as well.

As Gujarat only managed to score 105 runs, Delhi Capitals chased the target quite comfortably, they won the game by 10 wickets. Thanks to fabulous batting performances by captain Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma.

Lanning scored an unbeaten 21, whereas Shafali Verma was the star of the show with an unbeaten 76 off just 28 deliveries to guide her side to the win. Verma’s knock was the second-fastest fifty in the history of the WPL. The ace batter completed her half-century in just 19 deliveries.

Gujarat Giants’ woes continue

Gujarat Giants got off to the worst start to the inaugural WPL season, and the injury to skipper Beth Mooney in the very first game seems to have hindered their plans going forward. 

Gujarat first played against Mumbai Indians in the season opener of the tournament, where they were dominated throughout the game and it resulted in a loss for them. They next took on UP Warriorz which ended in a loss as well. Their next game against Royal Challengers Bangalore seemed to change things up for them, as they registered their first win of the competition.

Following their performances, Gujarat find themselves on fourth place on the points table with two points in four games. Only Royal Challengers Bangalore are below them in the standings, as they haven’t been able to win a single game so far.
