'They're not ready mentally' - Twitter reacts as Delhi Capitals suffer a horrible batting collapse in powerplay against Gujarat Titans
Delhi Capitals lost five wickets in the powerplay in match 44 of the IPL 2023.
The 44th game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 featured a clash between the defending champions Gujarat Titans and the David Warner-led Delhi Capitals at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, May 2.
After winning the toss, Delhi elected to bat first. Coming off a loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad, the visitors hoped that they could put in a better performance against Gujarat. However, the same did not seem to be the case, as they got off to the worst of starts in the first innings.
Phil Salt and David Warner opened the innings, however, the English batter was dismissed off the very first ball of the match. Salt tried to slash the ball over extra cover; however, it landed straight into the hands of David Miller. Things went from bad to worse for the visitors as skipper David Warner was run out in the very next over after scoring just two runs.
After Priyam Garg flicked the delivery to short midwicket, Warner ran from the non-striker's end; however, Garg did not anticipate the run. As Rashid Khan ran to the non striker's end to flick the bails off the stump, the Delhi skipper had already given up and walked straight to the pavilion.
Indian pacer Mohammed Shami looked to be in scintillating form for Gujarat as he managed to dismiss Rilee Rossouw in the third over of the game to further worsen things for Delhi. After Rossouwโs dismissal, Manish Pandey came to the front to stabilise Delhiโs innings.
Having scored 132 runs in six games at the IPL 2023 so far, Pandey looked to score some important runs in the middle order for the side. However, disaster hit them once again as Shami struck in the fifth over of the game to send Pandey packing for just one run.
Youngster Priyam Garg fell prey to Shamiโs exploits in the same way. Failing to judge the ball, a thick edge saw the delivery land straight in the hands of Wriddhiman Saha. Garg scored 10 runs in 14 balls before he was sent back to the pavilion. After the end of the powerplay, Delhi Capitals had lost five wickets and posted just 28 runs on the board. Having lost six games at the tournament so far, the teamโs woes continued at the Narendra Modi Stadium as well.
