Rajasthan Royals had a memorable outing in their 200th IPL match as they clinched a magnificent 32-run victory against MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings in the 37th game of the Indian Premier League 2023. Yashasvi Jaiswal’s batting prowess, followed by Adam Zampa and Ravi Ashwin’s brilliance in the spin department saw Rajasthan claiming another victory over CSK this season.
Winning the toss, Sanju Samson elected to bat first. The host skipper had a clear mindset, and that was reflected when openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler opened the innings for the side. While the latter took his game slow, Jaiswal breathed fire as he made full use of the powerplay and thanks to his knock, Rajasthan posted 64 runs in six overs.
Buttler walked off in the ninth over scoring 27(21), and Tushar Deshpande then struck twice in the 14th over, dismissing both Jaiswal and skipper Samson. Shimron Hetmyer too couldn’t create an impact, and just when it looked like the CSK bowlers had bounced back in the game, Rajasthan’s middle-order batters put up a show in the death overs.
Dhruv Jurel’s 15-ball 34 studded with three fours and a couple of sixes, followed by Devdutt Padikkal’s unbeaten 13-ball 27 helped Rajasthan Royals post a total of 202/5, the highest that the Sawai Mansingh Stadium has ever witnessed. Deshpande finished with two wickets, the most among the CSK bowlers, but ended up conceding 42 runs in his four-over spell.
CSK started off their chase on a sluggish note as openers Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway struggled to get going, and the Men in Yellow posted their lowers powerplay total of this season by scoring 42/1. After notching up four consecutive half-centuries, Conway could not continue the same momentum as he was dismissed scoring mere eight runs off 16 deliveries.
Gaikwad looked determined to put up a big score, but fell three runs short of a half-century, scoring 47 runs off 29 deliveries, after Adam Zampa dismissed him to pick his second wicket of the day. Ravichandran Ashwin put a dent in CSK’s batting unit by dismissing the in-form Ajinkya Rahane and the struggling Ambati Rayudu in the same over as the visitors were reduced to 73/4 after 10.4 overs.
It was then the defining partnership between Shivam Dube and Moeen Ali that kept CSK’s slightest chances of winning the game alive. Ashwin conceded just 20 runs in his first three overs, but Dube’s batting prowess led to the spinner finishing with figures of 2/35 after his fourth over. Zampa struck for the third time to dismiss Moeen, which led to Jadeja joining Dube in the middle.
But CSK lost momentum in the game after losing wickets at regular intervals. Dube’s valiant half-century, his sixth in the history of IPL, went in vain as the required run-rate kept increasing and pressure kept mounting on the batters. Eventually, Rajasthan bounced back to winning ways and put an end to CSK’s winning streak, handing the four-time champions their third defeat of the season.
