The Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium continued to be a nightmare for the bowlers on Day 4 of the first Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh. The visitors got themselves into a position of strength, having taken a first innings lead of 117 runs before Pakistan finished the day at 23/1 in their second essay.

Bangladesh started Day 4 at 316/5, trailing Pakistan's first innings score by 132 runs. Overnight batters Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das added just 16 runs to the overnight score before the latter was dismissed for 56 by Naseem Shah. Bangladesh still had some work to do and they needed Mehidy Hasan Miraz to give Rahim able company because another wicket would have exposed the tail.

Mushfiqur, Mehidy wear out Pakistan bowlers

The two right-handed batters grinded it out in the middle as Pakistani bowlers tried hard but couldn't find much assistance from the placid pitch on offer. Rahim registered his 11th Test ton and it was well-deserved because of the composure he showed in the middle. He and Mehidy stitched a sensational 196-run partnership off 336 balls to take Bangladesh beyond the 500-run mark.

Mushfiqur was eventually dismissed by Mohammad Ali for a 341-ball 191, nine runs short of what would have been his fourth Test double century. Mehidy played well for his sedate 77 off 179 balls and Shoriful Islam's cameo of 22 off 14 deliveries helped the tourists to finish on 565 in the final session.

Pakistan had a short phase of 10 overs to bat out and they lost the wicket of Saim Ayub in the second over itself as Shoriful drew first blood. With a considerable amount of time still left in the day's play, skipper Shan Masood (9*) walked out to the middle. He safely negotiated the remaining overs alongside Abdullah Shafique (12*) as Pakistan finished on 23/1, still trailing by 94 runs.

Bangladesh have almost batted themselves into a position from where they shouldn't lose this Test match. However, Pakistan have to bat well, especially in the first session on Day 5. The pitch hasn't deteriorated much and Bangladesh bowlers will have their task cut out.
