South Africa continued their winning run in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as they beat Australia by 134 runs on Thursday, October 12 in Lucknow. The Proteas bundled out Australia for 177 in 40.5 overs as they could never recover from the early blows. Kagiso Rabada starred with the ball as he picked 3/33 in eight overs while Marco Jansen (2/54, 7 overs), Keshav Maharaj (2/30, 10 overs) and Tabraiz Shamsi (2/38) also picked up two wickets each.

Australian chase didn’t get off to a good start as opener Mitchell Marsh (7 off 15) was once again dismissed cheaply. David Warner (13 off 27) also returned to the pavilion quickly in the very next over. Kagiso Rabada got rid of Steve Smith (19 off 16) and Josh Inglis (5 off 4) in back-to-back overs. Keshav Maharaj dismissed the dangerous Glenn Maxwell to leave Australia in all sorts of trouble at 65/5.

Marnus Labuschagne showed some fight with his knock of 46 off 74 but it wasn’t enough to bring his side back into the game. As a result, Australia got bundled out for 177 and lost their second consecutive match of the World Cup.

Earlier in the day, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma won the toss and elected to bat first. Bavuma (35 off 55) himself vindicated the decision as he put on a massive 108-run stand for the first wicket with Quinton de Kock. Following his dismissal, de Kock continued the attack from the other end and scored his second consecutive century of the World Cup 2023.

Australia dropped four catches in the field

The southpaw played an exceptional innings of 109 off 106 balls with the help of eight fours and five sixes. Aiden Markram also continued his brilliant form and notched up a half-century (56 off 44). The Australian side looked pretty flat in the field as they dropped four catches which let South Africa post a massive total of 311/7 in their allotted 50 overs. Glenn Maxwell was the pick of the bowlers for Australia with figures of 2/34 in ten overs while Mitchell Starc (2/53, 9 overs) also picked up two wickets.
