Twitter Reactions: Bowlers lead charge as Delhi Capitals script remarkable victory over SRH
Delhi Capitals put up an all-round performance as after a decent batting show, the bowlers managed to defend the score.
The 34th game of the Indian Premier League 2023, on April 24, witnessed a clash between the two struggling sides- Delhi Capitals and Sunrisers Hyderabad- at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. It was a crucial game for both sides to get back into the competition, and Delhi managed to do so as they claimed their second victory of the tournament.
Delhi skipper David Warner won the toss and elected to bat first. He had a new opening partner this time around in the form of England batter Phil Salt, who made his way into the playing combination for the contest. But things did not go as per plans for the visitors, as Phil was dismissed for a golden duck on just the third delivery of the first over of the innings.
David Warner, like usual this season, was left stranded in the powerplay as neither did this opening pair work for DC. It was then Mitchell Marsh’s 15-ball 25 runs short outing in the innings which helped Delhi put a respectable total on the scoreboard in the powerplay. Sarfaraz Khan, who found his way back into the side, failed to put up a remarkable performance too.
Though none of the Delhi batters got to a half-century, but combined efforts from Warner and Marsh in the beginning, followed by Manish Pandey and Axar Patel’s respective 34-run knocks helped the visiting side get to a decent total of 144/9 in their 20 overs quota. As for the hosts, Washington Sundar was the pick of the bowler as he picked up three wickets in a single over to derail DC’s innings.
It looked like an easy total for Sunrisers to chase when the opening duo of Harry Brook and Mayank Agarwal walked out to bat, but Anrich Nortje had some different plans. Mayank took the onus of adding runs to the scoreboard while Harry Brook took his game slow. It was then in the final over of the powerplay that Nortje dismissed Brook for a meager 14-ball 7.
Rahul Tripathi joined hands with Agarwal as the duo looked to stitch the innings, but brilliance by Axar Patel and veteran pacer Ishant Sharma saw the two finding their way back to the pavilion. Kuldeep Yadav bowled economically as he gave away only 22 runs in four overs while picking up the wicket of Abhishek Sharma. Axar was at his best again as he dismissed the big-man Aiden Markram to further add misery to SRH’s chase.
Nortje, who had started off his spell really well, was on the receiving end when Sundar and Heinrich Klaasen as the duo put up 41 runs in 26 deliveries for the sixth-wicket partnership. But Nortje had the last laugh when he dismissed Klaasen in the penultimate over of the game. The equation then came to SRH needing 13 runs off the final six deliveries to win the game.
Mukesh Kumar, who came as the impact player for Delhi, had a tough job, but he completed the task brilliantly and defended the target. Giving away just six runs in the final over, he restricted the Hyderabad batters from attempting any big shot, and helped Delhi Capitals clinch a seven-run victory, their second of the tournament.
