Twitter Reactions: Delhi Capitals sink Gujarat Titans in low-scoring thriller to remain alive in IPL 2023
Mohammed Shami's career-best IPL figures went in vain as Delhi Capitals halt GT's winning run.
It was another last-over thriller in the Indian Premier League 2023 when reigning champions Gujarat Titans squared off against Delhi Capitals. David Warner's side prevailed in a low-scoring affair to keep themselves alive in the 16th edition of the tournament, courtesy of a brilliant bowling performance after posting just 130 runs on the board.
It looked like a straightforward chase for the reigning champions at their home ground, given their impeccable record while batting second. But Wriddhiman Saha's dismissal for a duck, followed by Shubman Gill's cheap departure, brought the visitors right back into the contest.
Gujarat's star all-rounder Vijay Shankar, who starred with a magnificent half-century in the last outing, was next to depart after being cleaned up by Ishant Sharma's knuckle ball. However, it was David Miller's dismissal in Kuldeep Yadav's first over of the match, which felt like a hammer blow to the host's chances of winning the match.
Titans skipper Hardik Pandya kept battling for his side along with Abhinav Manohar, but the Delhi spinners kept a lid on the scoring rate in the middle overs, piling the pressure on the defending champions. While Hardik kept his side in the hunt with a fighting half-century, it was Rahul Tewatia, who came out all guns blazing, smashing Anrich Nortje for three consecutive sixes to tilt the match in his side's favour. However, Ishant Sharma bowled a brilliant final over to end GT's winning run in the competition.
Delhi Capitals recover to post a respectable total after Mohammed Shami's carnage
It was the visitors who won the toss earlier in the match and decided to bat first on a tricky surface. Delhi Capitals could not have started on a worse note as they lost explosive opener Phil Salt on the very first delivery of the match. Delhi skipper David Warner made his way back to the pavilion in the very next over after a mixup with Priyam Garg.
The Delhi batters were all at sea against the guile of veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami as he dismissed Rilee Rossouw and Manish Pandey in successive overs. Garg became Shami's fourth victim in the powerplay as the visitors lost half their side during the field restrictions.
It looked like an early finish was on the cards after Delhi's horror show in the powerplay, but Axar Patel and Aman Hakim Khan steadied the ship for the visitors with a 50-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Aman, who registered a fighting half-century, his first of the competition, found another valiant partner in Ripal Patel as Delhi managed a respectable total of 130 runs in their 20 overs.
