Durban Super Giants punched their ticket to Qualifier 1 in SA20 2024 after beating Pretoria Capitals by eight runs at Kingsmead, Durban on Tuesday, January 30.

Coming on the back of three consecutive wins, a confident Durban side won the toss and decided to bat first. They amassed 76 runs in the first seven overs for the loss of two wickets. Matthew Breetzke played a phenomenal knock of 73 runs off 46 balls, hitting 10 fours and three sixes. Heinrich Klaasen also scored 30 off just 18 balls, extending his purple patch in the tournament.

Pretoria pulled things back nicely in the backend of the innings, as they conceded just 67 runs and picked up seven wickets in the last ten overs. Durban finished on 174/9 in their 20 overs. Daryn Dupavillon and Senuran Muthusamy bagged three wickets apiece to help Pretoria muster a fightback in the contest.

After Phil Salt departed for a duck in the second innings, the Capitals had two decent partnerships for the second and third wickets of 40 and 35 runs, respectively. Will Jacks played a fine knock of 41 off 26 balls. However, Rilee Rossouw played an uncharacteristically slow innings of 10 runs off 27 balls and it made the equation very difficult for the batters to follow.

Durban rotated their bowling options nicely and gave all their bowlers a go-ahead for the all-important playoffs. In the end, the visitors lost by eight runs after 20 came off Keemo Paul's last over. Junior Dala was the pick of the bowlers for Keshav Maharaj's side. He finished with excellent figures of 5/26 in his four overs. With this loss, Pretoria have made things difficult for themselves, as they will have to rely on other results to qualify for the next phase of the tournament. Meanwhile, Durban will play their last game in the round-robin phase against Joburg Super Kings on Saturday, February 3.
