Twitter Reactions: Faf-Maxwell century stand in vain as CSK trump RCB in 444-run thriller
A total of 444 runs were scored during the clash.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) emerged victorious by three runs in a high-scoring chase against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The two fierce rivals locked horns in match 24 of the ongoing IPL 2023 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Monday, April 17.
Upon winning the toss, the skipper of the home side, Faf du Plessis decided to put the visiting team into bat first. Despite getting the early wicket of flamboyant batter Ruturaj Gaikwad for mere three runs, Devon Conway and Ajinkya Rahane took the onus of propelling CSK to a massive total.
The two batters unleashed carnage as they hammered RCB to raise a 74-run partnership off 43 balls. Conway seemed comfortable in his zone and got the boundaries with ease. Shortly after Rahane’s dismissal, left-handed Shivam Dube swiftly got into the groove and smashed five maximums and two boundaries to score a 27-ball 52.
Meanwhile, Conway got 83 runs to his name off 45 balls with six maximums and as many boundaries. The Yellow Army posted a massive first innings total of 226 runs in their stipulated 20 overs of the contest.
Faf-Maxwell display fireworks during run chase
It is worth mentioning that, no total is a definite big total at the Chinnaswamy Stadium considering its smaller dimensions and the lightning-quick outfield. In response to the massive score, RCB required a solid start to capitalize upon towards the latter phase of the game.
The opening duo of Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis seemed to be in the zone to get the required start. However, CSK drew first blood when they got the vital scalp of Kohli after the latter got dismissed in a peculiar manner.
What followed was Faf and explosive hitter Glenn Maxwell swiftly injecting momentum into the chase by getting the big runs. The two batters made full use of the powerplay (1-6 overs) and got 75 runs to remain steady in the chase.
Faf hammered his second-fastest IPL fifty, off just 23 balls with three maximums and five boundaries to his name. Maxwell too joined the party and clobbered five maximums and three fours to score his fifty off 24 balls. The two added a sensational 126 runs between them to hand RCB a potential win.
Soon after the big guns were dismissed, Dinesh Karthik played a quick cameo of 28 runs off 14 balls with three fours and one six. As the match went down to the wire, CSK eventually prevailed as a total of 444 runs were scored in the thrilling affair.
