The ongoing first Test match between Pakistan and New Zealand is seemingly heading towards a stalemate as both teams have so far kept each other at bay at the National Bank Arena in Karachi. The four days of this contest have only witnessed the batters making merry on a perfectly flat Karachi wicket with the bowlers taking punishments despite getting their line and lengths right.
Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson succeeded in completing a well-deserved double century and made a strong statement that he still is an integral part of the modern-day ‘Fab Four’. Williamson tested the patience of the Pakistani bowlers with his calm, composed and calculated approach.
Kane Williamson’s double century changed the complexion of the Karachi Test match
When Pakistan were bundled out for 438 runs in their first innings, it seemed that the hosts were in a dominant position after having more than the required number of runs on the board. However, that was not to be as the whole advantage was negated by the New Zealand batters who showed a lot of grit and determination in their approach.
While the Pakistani bowlers did pick up wickets, nothing came easily for them as they were taken to cleaners collectively by the BlackCaps batters. While Kane Williamson remained unbeaten on 200 runs off 395 deliveries, there were significant contributions from other end as well including the likes of Devon Conway (92), Daryl Mitchell (42), Tom Blundell (47), and Ish Sodhi (65) as the visitors eventually went on to declare their innings for 612/9 thereby, enjoying a massive 174-run first innings lead.
Pakistan in their quest to reduce the deficit and posting a challenging target for the Kiwis looked in control for a while as openers Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq added 47 runs for the first wicket before the former’s dismissal for 17 runs against his name.
Soon after the hosts received another setback in the form of Shan Masood who was dismissed for 10 runs. A well-set Imam then ensured that the Kiwis did not have anymore reasons to celebrate as he remained unbeaten on 45 in the company of Nauman Ali (4*) as Pakistan ended the day at 77/2. The hosts still trail by 97 runs.

Yes flat pitch but Pakistan's fielding hasn't helped bowlers either. They have missed 7 chances of taking a wicket. Two stumpings missed, two reviews not taken (when there was an edge), three catches dropped/missed. #PakvNZ

No appeals for edges, poor reviews, missed stumpings, dropped catches and missed run-out chances. Pakistan the very generous hosts #PAKvNZ #Cricket pic.twitter.com/UElOfv0rpV
